Haven't really posted on here much of late but I think people who are worrying about immigration and the democratic deficit the EU has really are not focusing on one of the biggest issues facing not just the UK but developed societies and the world in general. That is capitalism and how capitalism works in a globalised world and soon to be a globalised world in which automation of labour is going to take over and decimate lots of low skilled jobs. I think its important to focus upon how society is going to look in that world and where all these people are going to make a living. If these people aren't making a living are we going to see mass unemployment like many countries in Southern Europe.
If that happens a socialist type system will either come about or will come about following unrest and potentially violence. I think its clear, and many State's are waking up to the fact that the only way they can keep living standards and services afloat will be via a re-jig of the tax system and particularly corporate taxation. Theories like that of Piketty's on rate of return on capital are gaining traction. You can see large swings to the right with UKIP and Trump, but also the left with Sanders and Syriza being examples at the forefront. What underlies is anti-establisment feelings, suspicion of authority and a sense of inequality that is bottom line unsustainable.
I think the key actually lies in the US but the EU is similar and will follow. It will take a unified block of basically concentrated wealth to come out on the right side of those global changes. I don't think the UK is big enough to fight against global corporate power, and certainly not when we are struggling to pay the bills post Brexit.
Really really dislike the EU but I'll be voting to remain.
