Does anyone know how to answer 'to what extent is the new right internally incoherent?'
Thanks in advance

this is basically asking you to talk about the New Right paradox
i would have more points for it being largely incoherent because neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism clash so much

1. NL is quite principled e.g Thatcherism whereas NC is more reactionary as it sought to bring back traditional values to counter the sexual/cultural revolution in the '60's
2. NL believe in atomistic individualism whereas NC believe in authoritarian organism
3. NL are more optimistic in human nature as they human beings as rational and self-seeking whereas NC believe we are physiologically, intellectually and morally limited
4. NL believe in a mechanistic society( Thatcher paraphrased Bentham in saying "there is no such thing as society- only individuals and families") whereas NC believe in an organic society
Anyone have any predictions of what will come up as the nationalist essay question?

If anyone has done multiculturalism I could use your help on the key idea and types of questions that could come up :frown:

I could use the same help for nationalism
Anyone else in tears over this exam?

Nationalism seems to have the most repetitive 45 markers out of all the ideologies. They've always asked whether it's a forward/backward looking ideology, whether it's peaceful/destructive ideology, or whether it's a single doctrine. I don't see how they can ask another type of question for nationalism, although obviously you never know.

Please please don't cry over this exam! We have two days until unit 3, and four days until unit 4. That's still enough time to go through key concepts within the ideologies. I suggest that you really focus a lot on two ideologies that you feel confident in, and then make sure you can answer a 15 marker for the third ideology - do this for both units. I'll be on TSR fairly often over the next few days answering questions about ideologies that I'm revising (as it helps me to revise) so if you have a question about anything then post on here and I'll try to answer fairly quickly. You'll be fine :hugs:

Could you explain the principled bit a bit more please? I know what it means but I don't think I could write enough about it for a paragraph in an exam

Thank you so much. I'm just learning all the answers to the shorts on liberalism, conservatism and socialism. And all the essay answers on liberalism a few on conservatism and a few on socialism.

Would you be able to help me with: 'conservatives favour pragmatism over principle' discuss thank you. I don't k I what different factors I would consider or even what I would write about within the different factors.

I would say that traditional and neo conservatives favour pragmatism, and neo liberals favour principle overall.

Traditional and neo conservatives belief that human nature is intellectually imperfect, and so mistrusts any new human theories and ideas and favours tradition. Liberal ideas created as a result of the Enlightenment, such as equality and the rejection of the divine right of kings, for example, are rejected by conservatives. They also believe that pragmatism ensures that the natural social order of the world is not disrupted, which is a key thing for psychologically imperfect humans. This is shown by One Nationism, for example. However, it is worth mentioning that there are some principled beliefs in conservatism - the practice of One Nationism is used in order to preserve the principles of hierarchy, natural government and the social obligations of the well off.

Neo liberals disagree with the conservatives mentioned above and believe that humans are rational beings whose ideas should be followed. The best example of this is during the Thatcher era, where a limited state, strong emphasis on a traditional family and the idea of a authoritarian state were key ideas within neo liberalism and were not changed even when society demanded them to (there was social unrest due to these policies around the UK). However, it could be said that pragmatism does have an influence on Neo liberalism due to its creation as a result of pragmatic factors (the failure of the post-war social democratic consensus).

Talk about liberal, conservative, expansionist and post colonial nationalism. You don't necessarily need to talk about political and cultural nationalism, although it may help.

I don't really like predicting questions, as Edexcel may decide to change the pattern at any time. I find it harder to predict 15 markers. However, keeping within the pattern, I'd say a 45 marker on anarchism is most likely to come up, followed by liberalism.
Could someone help me with a detailed essay plan on 'to what extent is nationalism a backward looking ideology?'
It would be great if someone could help me out as I'm really struggling
Thank you. It'll be much appreciated xx

Thank you

Look on the Edexcel website
Jan 2013 was modern vs classical
'Nationalism looks to the past and not the future' discuss
To what extent is nationalism a backward looking ideology?

Do these questions mean the same thing and therefore require the same line of argument?

One more thing
You know for modern vs classical.....what's are the arguments that modern hasn't departed classical

They still remain loyal to liberalisms core belief such as individualism
Freedom
I think you could mention how welfare for modern liberals doesn't go to the extent as socialism's "cradle to the grave"
They recognise the limits and extent to state intervention and so on
