A woman's right to a surname

It isn't a choice for women. The oppressive patriarchal values that are instilled through gender socialisation reinforce these traditional values that subordinate women and keep them inferior to me- yeah i'm just ****ing with you.

Has some truth behind it though.

Because the husband is expected to propose, because the husband is expected to finance the wedding.

Actually traditionally the bride's family pays for the wedding, not the groom

"Contemporary" women's rights is about choice, if she chooses to take her husbands name, great, if she keeps her maiden name, great too. Nothing contradictory in a fundamental right to choose.

Why hold to traditions? Something doesn't magically become worth doing just because 'its traditional'. I mean yeah sure if you can't decide, why not go with tradition? But if you actually have a reason for not taking the husband's name (eg you prefer the wife's), why the hell would you?

Do they? Traditionally my family was religious and working class, among other things. I'm non-religious and middle class.

I hear people even marry people of the same sex these days!

Yes but we are talking about the most common rule of marriage.
Most men do not want to take their wives name, and I am just giving you the truth

Ah, so it's not really anything to do with tradition. Men don't like it, so therefore we should keep it that way. What a brilliant argument.

It's a choice, not obligatory. Although, I want to keep my future hubby's surname

What is the Arab Christian tradition when it comes to this, do women take up husband's surname?

It has all to do with traditional preferences, in which I have given you one.
I guarantee you that most meaning the majority of women would prefer to keep or take on their husbands name.

Sure, and given it's not hugely practical to have separate names, if the women are keeping theirs the husband should change his, no?

The husband should find someone else to marry

Good point, heaven forbid the man do anything he'd expect the woman to do.
A woman has a right to keep her name. However, I think there is a stigma if you don't have the same name as your children and it could be quite confusing for the children and other people.

More people keep their maiden names these days and men can take their wives surnames in many cases (through deed poll so more complex but still doable). I've decided to take my partners as it fits much better with both of our names than my double barreled one would, although we won't be or can't follow any other wedding traditions for sure.

Deal~
Where do i sign~ ?

But you believe that women should either take their husband's name or never get married.

I believe in a fact, and that fact is that women expect to take on their husbands surname

That is in no way a fact and I think we talk to different women.

I were to do a census and ask the majority of women in this country, they would agree with me,period

I suspect you'd find the majority undecided and planned to consider their options once they actually had a partner.

I mean, if my wife had an awesome surname I'd be inclined to take hers.
