I'm deaf AMA

I don't have one, I don't listen to music - partly for religious reasons but mainly because I couldn't enjoy it like I heard most people do

I literally fell off my chair with that one.

Why would someone ask a deaf person who their favourite musician is?

It's like asking a blind person what their favourite Painter is.
Do you think a lot? If so how do you sound?

How do you maintain faith, when you've been dealt a crappy hand like that?
Not trying to debate or anything here, just curious

Nah, it's cool,I'm not easily offended and this is an AMA.

Because I realise that others have been dealt an even crappier hand and that I'm actually really fortunate because I have the NHS and the government is fantastic when it comes to dealing with disabled people - I have more or less equal opportunities to a normal person and my parents are actually immigrants - so if they'd stayed then I probably would have a very bad life.

So yeah, lots to be grateful for

The cereal becomes too heavy if I do that and I just end up feeling really full - Oh you're a muslim too?!

Hahah, brilliant for 2am when you're barely awake - I still have Weetabix for sehri

Ahhh I see, yeah it does leave me feeling that way on normal school days, but yeah probz not the best way to feel if you need to cram loads of food xD Mhmm yes I am!

I knoooow. Did you know Coco Pops and warm/hot milk IS A LIE. Try coco pops and cold miiiilk, especialyl since it's summer, you can bear the cold milk. I swear the coco pops just don't get soggy, they remain soo crunchy and soooo nice. Trust me, if you haven't tried it yet, you need too!!

Hahahahaha, trust me, people have asked stupider questions.

Someone in my high school asked me if it mattered if my ears were to suddenly drop off...

._.

My ears are still useful.

Yeah, I do, and... people have sounds in their heads?

This is going to sound very stupid but I didn't realise there were meant to be actual sounds in your head...?

Like, when I'm thinking, I know how I'm talking and everything, but just on mute.

I suppose it's like I only realised that other people's dreams have sound in them after watching a video about how blind and deaf people dream.

I'm in between moderately and serevely deaf, I went to a primary school that had a special unit too which I also had to travel as it was an hour away from where I lived (including the terrible traffic) My secondary school, which I have just left had a SEN unit but I didn't feel like I had as much support as I did in my previous school.

How did you find people's attitudes towards you in school when you told them/ made them aware that you were deaf?

Hahah, yeah, especially since you're still groggy sleep and 2am isn't a normal time to eat. Woo! :five:

Whaaaaaat? Cold milk in cereal? That sounds gross! I would try that cuz I hate soggy cereal too but chocolatey cereals aren't my thing

You ever had chocolate chip cookie cereal tho?

Sometimes, it really depends on the situation.

I.e if I'm in a social space in college with my friends then I find it quite hard because I cannot possibly hear anyone and if I can't see them then I have to continuously ask them to repeat and in other situations where I'm helpless and can't really do anything to improve.

But I have developed my own ways of improving the situation I suppose you could say

So do you feel like the hearing aids are adequate?

Argh, mine was only half an hour away but I thought it was so worth it! Oh no, that's a shame, so are you in sixth form now? It was the same in my secondary school, but I think it was kind of good cuz it meant more independence.

Hmm, in primary school, it was obvious and so I was excluded and not really given a chance to socialise/mix with the mainstream kids which was painful. Then in secondary school, I wore a hijab so it wasn't obvious and when people did ask me and I told them, they didn't really care which I loved.

Now I'm in college and I haven't really dared to tell anyone besides the nosy ones who ask (why can't people just mind their own business >.>) because I don't want people thinking differently of me/pitying me/ I'm really paranoid and insecure about it.

How about you? How did you find people reacted to you and did you manage to cope after a sudden lack of support in high school?

that's mean -_-

And this is what I hate about people - they keep jumping to conclusions about what people should and shouldn't do - IT'S AN AMA FFS - and it's a valid question, I have a cochlear implant so I can't technically hear somewhat.

Can I assume that from that reaction, you are tired of people pitying you for your condition and thus don't want them to pity you and just treat you normally?

Nah, I just don't want a bowl of sugar first thing in the morning - I could have it if I liked, just had some chocolate ice cream as my midnight snack

Hahah, I defo won't! Don't think I'm gonna risk it!

YES OMG BEST CEREAL EVER. Now I'm just thinking of all the best cereals - have you ever had curiously cinnamon? I know it's a little weird but I live the cinnamon flavour! And have you had the other versions of Weetabix like banana, chocolate chips, syrup etc.

Yes, a million times, yes. I would love it if everyone could just treat me normally -the number of times I've had a conversation with someone and then I reveal my deafness and they're like "oh, can you hear me now?" And I can see them adjusting as if they're helping LIKE I COULD HEAR YOU THIS WHOLE TIME - sorry about that rant, but I am fully capable and confident enough to ask people to repeat stuff, ask them to sit on my right side so I can hear them etc etc

Would you know how animals sound?

What do you do about music?

Do you find it easier to study without all these acoustic distractions?
