Does anyone know if they usually give you certain formula in questions such as "find the rate of change of the volume of this cone"? or do I need to know all the volume formula?

has anyone done the june 2016 C34 IAL paper yet - this exam was 2 days ago? The C3 questions in it were very similar to the ones that we had on our paper. Maybe with a bit of luck we may have similar C4 questions that were on that paper..

I'm going to do it now, only the c4 bits of course. Hopefully we get lucky.
For an integration question, if its ask for an exact value you give it as a decimal how many marks do u get

guys you know when they ask you to 'use your approximation to estimate an approximate value of blah blah and you have to find X. how do you find x.? for example, ques 4b here:

http://qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/A%20Level/Mathematics/2013/Exam%20materials/6666_01R_que_20130618.pdf

(7100)^1/3 = (7.1)^1/3 * (1000)^1/3 = 10 (7.1^1/3) [Law of surds]
7.1 = 8 - 9x, x = 0.1

Plug in this value of x into your expansion and voila, an approximation.

Edit: just noticed the mod x limitation.

So you're looking for 7100^1/3, but you need to remember that mod x < 8/9

So you need to realise that you should find the value of x to give the cube root of 7.1, (which gives x=0.1), and then multiply your estimate by 10 to give the cube root of 7100:

(7100)^1/3
=(7.1x1000)^1/3
=1000^1/3 x 7.1^1/3
=10 x 7.1^1/3

Edit: Hopefully the person that asked sees this, not sure why it didn't quote 🙄

Anyone else always make stupid mistakes? Like I just did a 9 marker and would have got it right, but I wrote sec^2x down and then next line changed it so sin^2x

Anyone have any tips on how to avoid making these sort of mistakes?
Is there a link to the IAL paper for this year? I'd like to have a go at the C4 parts for some new material!

No you wouldn't have to! But it would be easier to do algebra with (1,2,4) rather than (6,12,24) - it's just the value of λ \lambda will be different in r=a+λb r = a + \lambda b

but you can use (6,12,24) right? because in Q7 of this paper I got wrong answer using the this method.

thank you very much............... ready for c4??

Thank you! Good luck for tomorrow

Good luck to you too!!

You wouldn't have the got wrong answer any of the direction vectors parallel to (1,2,4)! All you'd get is a different value of λ \lambda ! Try it again if it didn't work
