If you don't get one, it is definitely something that you can find the answer to for yourself.

Each module will have weightings (may be expressed as credits, maybe not). They could all even be equally weighted, but anyway, they take these weights and your grades into account and calculate an overall average. There may also be tiny conditions and rules and stuff like that, but it'd all be explained somewhere in a 'handbook' (or an electronic copy), and that becomes your first year grade.

A quick example. If you studied 4 units in 1 year (unlikely, but that's not the point here), one was 12 credits and the other two were 6 credits each, and they were equally weighted (i.e 25% of the whole year each) and you got 70 in the 12 and 60 and 50 in the other two then your overall would be (70 * 0.5) + (60*0.25) + (50*0.25) = 62.5 = 2:1 classification. (the 70 is multiplied by 50% because it makes up half the credits of the year).
