From the video he was pinned down and incapacitated. He could have been tased if need be. The use of force should be proportionate to the risk.

Also he was in an open carry state.

And yes I'm aware of that.

If that's pinned down and incapacitated I would be interested what you would call it if he actually were, given how much he was moving it's quite a claim to make. And while it may be an open carry state, it's not a concealed carry state

What do you mean if he was a threat??? They shot him 6 times! What is the need to ever shoot someone 6 times, so close, in his chest! There is no way he couldve even had a chance of survival.

The cops were not going to be aware that his gun was obtained legally at the time of arrest anyway. He's defence will most likely bring up Sterlings criminal past and his illegal weapon to smear him and paint the picture retrospectively that the cops may have genuinely feared for their lives. But practically speaking, they had none of that information when they tried to arrest him, and there is no justification to be trigger happy at the sight of a gun in an Open Carry State.
What the cops did was negligence and homocide at the very least. So they definitely need to be fired.

Whether the weapon was legally bought with or not it was illegal carried, open carry is legal in Louisiana, concealed carry is not.

With a permit, not generally.

The need comes from the fact that real life isnt Hollywood people can function after being shot and are still capable of carrying out their plan of hurting you, it is the standard procesure for a reason

Maybe the fact they were called after he threatened someone with the gun and the fact if someone has a gun you have to believe they are willing to use it or put other peoples lives at risk.

I don't really know what you're getting at, because only in Hollywood can someone be shot six times in the torso and survive.

They had tased him but it didnt affect him.

I agree and someone who is reportedly drunk and threatening people with a gun is a pretty big threat.

What is your magical solution for when police fear for their lives?

To change carrer paths. Because concealed and open carry is legal in that state. Another innocent black man has just been killed today, as he was armed with a permit but the police man was in "fear". These trigger happy cops are simply not qualified.
The cop that killed Tamir Rice had the same problem and he was already fired from another police department before the incident occurred... Because he was not qualified. Law enforcement is not a job for everyone.

This cop was in a lot more danger than the cops who had Sterling pinned down yet he didn't kill the criminal.

Isn't it better if police shoot to incapacitate (if such force is even necessary) than shoot to kill? Then maybe there wouldn't be a need for violent protests.

It's a recurring issue and whilst it's easy to look at the issue as a whole, we still need to look at each individual incident. We can all admit that apparent police brutality is disgraceful, no one should die in policy custody, especially if they're restrained at the time. It seems every day, more and more US citizens are being killed by police officers - something needs to be done.

I raise you Charles Dozsa, look him up, rather interesting arrest and either the Australian police in the 80s were truly pathetic or it's not as easy to arrest someone who is resisting as you think

Shooting to wound is 'neither practical nor desirable'

'As a policy, [shoot to wound] is a really bad idea because it would give the police permission to take that gun out of the holster under any circumstance'

These cops were in no danger and shot where is your outrage over this case?

It's absolutely heartbreaking to see this! Can't believe the US officers done this. R.I.P. Alton Sterling :frown:

I didn't say it was impossible but it is impractical trying to shoot arms and legs won't stop the danger and the police would likely miss them anyway.

Shooting to wound would also lower the standards for an officer to shoot and that would likely lead to more deaths.

Not necessarily. This is a false dichotomy.
