Pretty common advice given on internet forums that if you show too much interest in a girl you appear needy and as if you have no value. Putting your eggs into one basket.

I hate game playing when it comes to dating, but some men's attempt at not investing too much in a girl is to play hot and cold. Clearly it works, because it has invoked a response by the OP trying to find out what's going on.
Oh really? Hmm I think it's nice to show interest but then again, it depends what form that takes. And I agree, no need for games.
I suppose so, it didn't make much sense to me so I related it to what I knew.
You're trying to ask a public forum something that ultimately only he knows.

In this instance

Hot means that he would be acting kindly and friendly towards her
Cold means that he would be shunning and ignoring her, even acting unkindly

So the fluctuation between the two is confusing and contradictory
