How do I become a racing driver?

No I'm not joking first of all. XD

I've had a bit of a read up, but all that I know is that most people start out in Go Karts. However I don't understand how the transition happens from karts to cars.

Basically I want to know how one would progress in the racing ladder, and what licences exactly are needed?

Bit of info, I'm 17 and from UK. I also heard that its better to start younger (and am I young enough to really start it properly?)

I think you are too late to work up from karting.

Have you done any single-seater circuit driving at all? It's a very expensive sport to break into..
