How many ways is there to solve this linear equation?

2y+17=6y+5 2y+ 17 = 6y+5

12=4y 12 = 4y - Taken 2y off both sides and I have also taken the 5 off both sides

Therefore - 12/4=y 12/4 = y - divided by 4 to get y by itself, giving you the answer of 3

So, no It doesn't matter.

All of the methods are perfectly valid - it doesn't matter what you do as long as you perform the same operation to both sides of the equation.

No, it doesn't. The main point is that you do your steps on both sides of the equation. It is up to you what you begin with. *
