Quick Question.
Is there a minimum Formal requirement to guarantee a summer pooling of a maths candidate taking A levels and STEP. Or is this completely case by case depending on how the college feel about you?
Also is there a minimum threshold required to be summerpooled?

No there is no compulsory summer pooling in Mathematics (in other subjects, candidates who met the typical offer are compulsory pools). Realistically, Mathematics candidates need to have achieved or be close to a 1 in one or both of the STEP papers to be placed in the Summer Pool. Just as in the Winter Pool, the majority of those pooled are not taken by other colleges.

Anyone we do not wish to take here, but think would be of interest to other colleges can be placed in the Summer Pool.

So a high 1 in both papers for a gap year student should be enough off an S,1 offer?

Everything is on a case-by-case basis I'm afraid, but 1,1 would probably merit a place in the Pool.

if an applicant is rejected in jan with the reason in their feedback being that based on their interview performance the AT's thought the tripos would be too hard for them, but come august their results demonstrated the opposite could they be made an offer by their original college, or even could they be put in the summer pool?

No, I'm afraid that once your application is rejected that's the end of the process and there's no way to consider you. The only way to enter in October is to currently hold an offer.

I ain't the Peterhouse people but Olympiads will help alot especially at Trinity.
This means getting a medal in BMO1 and or doing well in BMO2 or your equivalent in your countries training scheme.

As many as we need to, there's no fixed number or quota. Historically this is generally 1 or 2 but every year is different.

Studenst are assessed using all available information. This certainly includes A levels or other equivalent qualifications and study but also includes maths competitions and challenges. The best preparation for an application to Mathematics is to do as many hard maths questions as possible.

Performance at interview and in the College-set maths test are important in getting an offer, as are things like your teachers' reference and predicited grades.
If somebody applies with three As levels will they be disadvantaged from somebody who applies with four as levels even though the latter will have more UCAS points?

No. Typical offers are based on 3 subjects in year 13. The number of subjects taken in year 12 depends on your school's policy so we'd just expect you to follow that. For Mathematics we're really mostly interested in Maths+FM and, to a lesser extent, Physics. We don't look at UCAS points at all.

The requirements in terms of typical offer is the same and we require Maths and Further Maths (if available) to A level or equivalent, but for Maths with Physics we also require Physics to A level or equivalent. You should have a genuine and clear interest in Physics as well as in Mathematics and you will have an additional Physics interview (with preparatory problems) in addition to the interviews, College test and assessment that all Mathematics applicants take.

Hi, I have been on this thread before. I just want to know (even though you said people won't be deterred if they don't have Physics) but if I do Physics AS (Year 12) and drop it in Year 13. But, at the end of Year 13 I get A* A* A (Maths, Further Maths, Economics respectively) and C/B at Physics AS would I get a chance for interview. Or would that Physics really put you guys off lol?
