Who else thinks the new Edexcel A-level maths specification is hideous?

I'm sorry but not being able to do FP3 and FP4 along with 2 from D1/D2/FM1/FM2/FS1/FS2 is ridiculous and foolish. What if people want to delve into both further pure and mechanics (like me right now!) or the other combinations???? This new specification has no pathway for versatility without sacrificing too much (I am aware that for versatility some will be lost) FP content that one could learn.

Uh... then delve into it, surely you don't need to learn something only because of an exam? You can always learn something for the pure pleasure of learning it and not because of an exam that will test you on it.

While this is very true, I believe there comes a time where you have a right to do things you are good at (say, both FP and stats) and should be able to spread your wings without losing a lot of ground, as in, while retaining a lot of content covered. I feel like the new spec denies people a right to study a variety of modules and yet still be able to specialise by the end of it.

pretty much my whole class were retaking C1 and C2 this year and without such an opportunity to boost up their ums these people likely would miss their offers for sure so the thought of having only one chance as it were to bank all your ums seems pretty terrifying

I won't deny it, I'd have a high risk of failing with all that pressure.

I agree I mean last year I only just got an A in maths cause i was doing maths and FM so my ums all got mixed around to give me A's in both and this year c3 went bad but thankfully the other modules will mean i should still get my A grade but i flopped under the pressure even though I had a good ums total already behind me but if i was starting with nothing and had to ace like 3 exams first time around to get into uni i would mess up

Ah well done anyway! I've already started C3, some C4, FP2 and M2 and will also do FP3, M3, D1 and maybe even M4! I'm sure C3 went well!!

C3 and C4 are actually quite simple units but you can still mess up the exams so just make sure you know the content and focus more time on the further pure units where the grade boundaries are typically higher !

If you start AS in September then yes you'll still sit the spec's A2 part in 2018 however retaking after 2019 probably won't be possible.

So it's possible to still do A-level maths (2008) this year. You'll have to complete it in one year, but it's still do-able.

Teaching of the new specification starts in September 2017.
It will be possible to start A level maths in September 2016, study for 2 years as normal and take the A2 exams in summer 2018 and if necessary take unit resits in summer 2019.
