Is Computer Science essential for a career in Cyber Security?

I have an offer to study Information Technology Management for Business currently and I am becoming increasingly interested in a career in Cyber Security. Most Cyber Security Masters degrees state Computer Science as an entry requirement though often state that similar courses are sometimes accepted and I was wondering if the above course would be accepted as there are programming elements to the course although obviously not as in depth as Compu-Sci. I am also wondering about alternate routes into Cyber Security.

I doubt you will be accepted to do masters in cybersec as "Information Technology Managment for Business" doesn't sound very compsci related, unless i'm wrong

Most jobs in cyber security do not require a comp sci degree or a masters in cyber security (whilst others require you to have a degree that is related to comp sci in a way), in fact most just want you to have experience and know some essential programming language (with experience). Thank you for your reply. The degree isn't Comp Sci but I have always been leaning more towards IT than CS if you see what I mean. Tks once again :smile:

Some do indeed seem to want to relevant experience and are not so specific, I am always leaning more towards combining the business and technical elements (Cyber Consultant) as opposed to the sole technical elements (Ethical Hacker). Thank you very much for your help and for the useful link also!

Not sure about management for business but a degree in information technology will lead the same path with a computer science degree for the OP since he/she will have to do honours to specialise in cyber security

If you want a real career in Cyber security, I.e. developing techniques, as opposed to troubleshooting and technical support , then you need Mathematics and/or Computer Science, even Physics/Electronic engineering

That's very interesting to hear you will be studying a cyber degree, there seems to be few Unis offering them but I am sure more will offer them in the coming years. I completely agree with you that cyber is a relatively new industry but is seeing exponential growth with it.
