Why is India so bad at the Olympics?

http://www.euronews.com/2016/07/28/why-does-india-perform-so-poorly-at-the-olympics

It's the worst in terms of medals per person of the population. And poverty is not an argument here. There are far poorer African and Asian nations which perform far better than India in the Olympics.

Genetics.
All the money is invested in cricket.:h:
Although idk why i'm complaining my country hasnt one a single medal 0_o
No funding for Olympic sports unfortunately, and there is no encouragement is schools or to young people to take up sports.

Taking sports seriously in India is frowned upon and unlike the UK, children rarely do sports in schools.

And with a population of 1.2 billion, i doubt genetics is a factor, there will be plenty of people who have great potential to do well in sports.

They don't find the Olympics important compared to other nations. They value education more and many seek for stable and economically viable jobs. But attitudes are changing in their communities, the middle class population is growing and they are able to enjoy more leisure time and in a few decades things may improve for them in the Olympics as well as other sports with the exception of cricket.
Culture. If parents don't want their kids doing sport from a young age then it's unlikely they'll take up new sports later in life.

Because india only want people to become nerds and geeks not to do sports, porn etc
Pretty much what marina said. There culture isn't hung up in sports but more on education.

You can do both?

You CAN do both... but the mentality isn't there in India (bar a small percentage of people). A lot of the Indian mentality rides around doing well in education alone.

Well not true exactly. Indians do care about sports, but only cricket.

Yes, for all other sports, they couldnt care less.

Pretty much this^^^^

the infamous 'aye-joo-cation' is much more important to Indian and Pakistani parents than sports. if 9 out of their 10 children aren't on their way to becoming a top dock-tur then they run the risk of being disowned (can't prevent mummyji and papa from having a reason to brag to their friends and family...)
Its just not culturally encouraged like software engineering is.
