Real problems in Venezuela with their economy collapsing and a big food shortage, there is even cases of people killing zoo animals to get food, what do you make of it all?

Horrible situation to watch.
I thought venezuela had rainforest and agricultural field.
What's even more mind boggling is all these aid agencies go to the most remote places on earth to feed people, where are they in Venezuela?
I just seen a news report of *local* aid in the country who would only give food to people who supported and voted for the socialist party.

what do you make of it?

It's only going to get remarkably worser before it gets better for Venezuela.

One of my best mates still lives in a wealthy suburb in Caracas

Even he who is decently paid and middle class; has to deal with random power blackouts and can't walk out alone at night. Some days at the supermarket the only thing he can buy is fruit...

Literally sometimes the shelves are empty and you can't buy certain foods, he snapchatted me a rather large bag of oranges the other week (it was the only thing he could buy at the local store).
It's a terrible crisis. About a 50-50 chance they will default as well: https://app.almanis.com/#/outcomes/380
Might be better to default and try to reset. Apparently the government has blocked some aid from coming into the country which is pretty terrible if true: http://fusion.net/story/308479/venezuela-blocks-humanitarian-aid-as-crisis-gets-crazier/

I also have a middle-class Venezuelan mate but he left a few years ago as the government made the country even more crap than it was already.*

Another victory for central planning and state control over key industries.

But I'm sure the West is to blame for installing a useless govt and lowering oil pric- oh wait.

With their wealth in natural resources, Venezuela ought to be richer than Dubai and Qatar. But since they instead decided to implement probably the most retarded policies known to man, they now are in a perpetual state of economic chaos. And this was the regime Corbyn, Abbott et all lauded as being the true way. I'm not even joking, both of them are on record as saying we should be like them. I know some people (including them probably) who will blame Venezuela's woes on us and America anyway instead of their dumb policies that everyone with common sense knew would lead to this but hey ho.......

@oShahpo, remember you were asking why Venezuela aren't richer than Saudi Arabia... it turns out, there are worse (and more corrupt) countries than KSA

The problem is that Venezuela just doesn't have the infrastructure or experienced workforce to actually produce food any more. They've been importing produce (and plenty of other things, like medicine) for years now, relying on oil exports to cover the cost. This was economically viable, for a time, but by putting all their eggs in one basket they've been utterly screwed over by the falling oil prices.

Now with the constant decline, even if Venezuela wanted to, it's in no fit position to be starting up new industries to try and stimulate the economy and either create new exports or build local industries. It's well and truly a mess.

Then of course, there's the old elephant in the room: massive corruption of the establishment. Again, this has been going on for decades, and now it's come to bite the entire country in the bum. Government officials will likely continue to bleed the economy dry before making out like a bandit when it all finally collapses.

lol I made the same mistake yesterday but in spoken word and was corrected. What are the chances.
Anyone with a brain knows that decreasing your own agricultural capabilities and relying on food imports linked to oil prices is a disaster waiting to happen.

Like Zimbabwe they should be a wealthy country but the rulers blame "Imperialism" for their own stupidity.

There are plenty of places around the world that need aid more than Venezuela does. Also, another poster mentioned that the government may have been blocking aid from coming in. Not sure if that's actually the case or not though.

What do you base that on?
This was almost 1 year ago, and today Venezuela is worst :frown:
