Will Brexit help reduce the number of foreign criminals entering the UK?

Particularly Romanians. 1 in 3 Romanians living in the UK has been arrested, and Romanians form the most common nationality of foreigners jailed in the UK.

I really hope Brexit means less of these Romanians and other East Europeans coming over here to commit crime / scam the benefits system.

Having been what they call a "loyal" listener of Tim Halford's Radio 4 programme about statistics behind the news, More or Less, I can't help but be sceptical about headlines such as, "1 in 3 Romanians arrested!"

At least the Telegraph article mentions that the Office for National Statistics only has an estimate of the number of Romanians in the UK. The honest answer is we simply don't know since anyone from the EU can simply drive over here, show their passport and they are waved through without being recorded. When Eastern Europe was allowed in, the Home Office estimated a few tens of thousands of Polish folks would come. As we know it was vastly higher. Likewise, my guess would be that 87,000 is a few short.

The second point to make is that this refers to arrests and not convictions. Just because 27,000 Romanians were arrested does not mean they necessarily committed 27,000 crimes. But the final thing to ask is, is 27,000 a big number? In 2015, English and Welsh officers made 950,000 arrests and in 2013, the crime survey suggested there were around 7.5 million crimes against households and resident adults. I think on average, if I am going to be scared of criminals, I reckon I am going to be more fearful of UK born crimos than those from abroad.

Why dont other people realise statitsics can be manipulated?

OP it depends on what brexit means. If we keep access to the single market, that will mena free movement of people as now, which means it will make no difference on the ease with which EU citizens can vist each others countries.

More importantly crime rates have been going down over the long term.

This is in part because taxes paid for by immigrants - who pay far more into the system than they take out (EU ones anyway) - help pay for services like Police.

I think that if the UK leaves the EU, the influx of migrants will be reduced many times over. This will reduce the crime, wages rise even slightly. I think it would be better for people, but not for the employer, since it will not cheap labor.
