An "I got into Oxford with these grades" thread

Hi,

I know that this already exists in the Uni Connect and Oxford Offer Holders thread but I think that it is not sufficient since it is hard to accumulate all these information). This is a thread where current applicants could create a general picture of a successful applicant (not only those who had 15 A* at GCSEs 6A* at A level but also those who had grades in the lower quartile "meh grades". It would be great if current students/offer holders/former Oxford students could fill out this form.

There's no problem with the thread
Course: Music :musicus:
College: Woosta (Worcester)
Year applied: 2006 :shakecane:
GCSEs (or their equivalent): 7 A*s and 3 As
AS: aaac in Music, English Lit, French and Physics
A2 levels/ IB (predicted grades): AAA in Music, English Lit and French
Offer: AAA
A2 level grades achieved: AAB (B in French, 1% off the A grade) :headfire:

General comments: Don't get too excited by the fact I got in without the grades - I am an exception to the rule! :iiam:

It's also worth highlighting that my application was in the pre-A* grade days. Under the current system, I would have got A*A*B

Course: Biochemistry
College: Christ Church
Year applied: 2010 for 2011 entry
GCSEs (or their equivalent): 7 A*s and 6 As

A2 level grades achieved: A*A*A*A (A in French)

General comments: I know it's hard to tell but I don't think my interviews went particularly well. I might have shed a few tears after bombing in the second one...

And - purely for historical interest - here's my own record:

Course: Zoology
College: St Peter's
Year applied: 1977
GCSEs (or their equivalent): 5 A, 4 B.
AS: No such thing then - we had something called "S" levels, which the favoured few sat. I did an "S" level in Biology and got unclassified (!)
A2 levels/ IB (predicted grades): not asked for
Offer: EE
A2 level grades achieved: A (Biology) A (Chemistry) C (Physics)
Pre-Interview exam (BMAT/HAT/PAT etc.)score: 3 Oxford Entrance Exam papers, in Biology, Chemistry and "General" (like the TSA 2 with questions like, "'Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it' - Gide. Discuss."
General comments: The interviews were just the same as today's!
(edited 7 years ago)
Course: Mphysics
College:Mansfield
Year applied:2015
GCSEs (or their equivalent):5A*2A 1B
AS: in my country we do 3 A levels and 2 As at the end of 1.5 year

Offer: A* A A
A2 level grades achieved:3A* 2a (As)
Pre-Interview exam (BMAT/HAT/PAT etc.)score:Pat score was 95
General comments: I think the pat matters the most here for me as though i think i aced one of the interviews my second interview was not that great
Course: Experimental Psychology
College: University College
Year applied: 2016 entry
GCSEs (or their equivalent): 11 A*
AS: A in Biology, B in Geography, C in Eng Lang & Lit
A2 levels/ IB (predicted grades): A* in Bio, A in Geo, A in Eng, A* in EPQ
Offer: A*AA (excl. EPQ)
A2 level grades achieved: A*A*A*A*
Pre-Interview exam (BMAT/HAT/PAT etc.)score: TSA 58.7 (and unintentionally wrote a really really weird essay that turned out to have salvaged my mediocre score (due to that I didn't finish and put all Cs for the last 14 of my questions))
General comments: Be weird enough and work hard (in my case, to prove that I'm better than the ABC at AS lol) and EPQ (be really serious with it as it will give you so much knowledge and help you so much at interviews)
Course: Modern Languages (German and Spanish)
College: Magdalen
Year applied: 2011 for 2012 entry
GCSEs (or their equivalent): 13 A*s
AS: AAAAA
A2 levels/ IB (predicted grades): A*A*A*A
Offer: AAA
A2 level grades achieved: A*A*AA (plus A in EPQ)
Pre-Interview exam (BMAT/HAT/PAT etc.)score: Did two MLATs but no idea what score
General comments: Happy to help any languages applicants!
Course: English
College: Harris Manchester
Year applied: 2008 entry

AS: N/A
Offer: AAA - this was before A*s existed for A-level!*
A2 level grades achieved: AAAB
Pre-Interview exam (BMAT/HAT/PAT etc.)score: ELAT: 51/60
General comments: I had such a horrible time in my first interviews (Keble), I almost gave up and bailed on my second set. Second set went surprisingly well, and the rest is history. Moral: go to all of your interviews, even if you feel like you'll be wasting your time!
Course: Chemistry
College: Worcester
Year applied: 2013 (for 2014 entry)
GCSEs (or their equivalent): 10A* 2A
AS: 5A's (Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Economics)
Offer: A*AA
A2 level grades achieved: 4A* (Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Physics) + A* in EPQ
Pre-Interview exam (BMAT/HAT/PAT etc.)score: no test for Chemistry back in 2013
General comments: EPQ title was along the lines of "A comparison of Valence Bond and Molecular Orbital theories and their success in predicting bonding in simple molecules"
Also had a couple of mock interview organised in sixth form!

It would be nice if someone added their results, especially the ones that are less than stellar results but still deserved a place at Oxford...
Hey, all the people who got in this year, it would be great if this thread continued ( saves a lot of hunting around )
Course: English Lang and Lit
College: Jesus
Year applied: 2017 Entry
GCSEs (or their equivalent): IGCSE 9 A*s
AS: n/a
A2 levels/ IB (predicted grades): 41/45
Offer: 666 at Higher Level, with a 6 in English HL
A2 level grades achieved: n/a
Pre-Interview exam (BMAT/HAT/PAT etc.)score: no idea.. I lost the sheet that was given to me after I took the ELAT that provided me with the username and password details :/
General comments: I was so convinced that my ELAT went awfully, but when I got the interview, I was taken aback. The interviews were okay, bad, and okay in that order- just goes to show that the worst interviews could actually be the one's that get you in!
