Going to university at 17

So I've got an offer to go to Strathclyde this year, however I'm really young for my year as I turn 18 at the start of February... that's about 5 months of not being able to go to pubs, bars, etc. I'm fairly concerned as I know a large deal of 1st year is going out and socialising with others and I'm worried I'll be left in the halls lots of the time while others are out. People who are at uni, what do you think about this?

Take a gap year!

I wouldn't worry about it too much! There will be plenty of parties and stuff that you can still attend I'm sure! Just go for it if you want to. If not then do a Gap year :smile:

I went to Strathclyde and lots of first year's were 17...they had plenty of fun. And were out and about with everyone else. Don't worry about it for a second...

One of my friends was 17 throughout the whole of first year! She was a bit gutted she shouldn't drink/go clubbing etc but she still had an amazing and fun first year!

If it's important to you to be able to go out to pubs and bars with everyone else then just defer your entry for a year.

It'll give you a chance to get some much needed work experience and save some money as well.

I really wouldn't worry too much. You will make friends and you can still go out and socialise without drinking.

I'm at the other end of the spectrum, I'm nearly 29 and have three children; therefore socialising for me isn't an easy thing to do. But, I'm sure I'll make friends with some like-minded people.

February isn't really that far away :smile:

I think at times it was a little difficult for them, but you'll still get into the Union for Freshers Events. Also, not every first year goes out to pubs and clubs - there are usually a number of flat parties going on (especially Halloween) and you could try joining a society as well to socialise in your free time. As someone who is on a committee we normally make an effort to ensure anyone who is underage can come to at least some of our socials

It's not that uncommon to go to Uni at 17, when I go I will be 17 and a lot of other people in my year will be too. You don't need to take a gap year, if you want to go straight to Uni, go straight to Uni :smile:

Just because you aren't drinking doesn't mean you can't go out with them, and anyway there's always a need for sober responsible people to take care of the drunks :tongue:

PREACH! I will be 17 too. 17 and 5 months to be precise, and I sure ain't drinking. So it's alright OP, hang out with the Scots. Most will be 17 as they finish school a year earlier. @Okle321

I didn't even make it was possible to get to university level at 17, I've just finished GCSEs and I'm 17 in 2 months - defo not ready!

My advise is not to worry about it. There will be plenty of people there of different age groups including yours. There will be house parties, and societies you can join, e.g. My sisters boyfriend is in some dungeons and dragons one and they get together and play that (I think...). Also you can get a fake ID if needs be, or a friend can buy you a drink. Or you can go with them to the place and just drink a coke or something. Good luck! :tongue:
