The Student Room Group

Urgent Advice Needed

Hi. So I did a lot better than I was expecting, and got ABCE today, I was expecting BBCU. However my friends didn't do so well and picked up results that ranged basically from B to U. Now all of my friendship group, the same group I've been with for the last 6 years, has decided to move colleges. Some are retaking the year, others are continuing with some subjects while taking up others and adding an extra year anyway. I don't need to retake anything, I dropped the E grade subject, and will continue forward with my ABC. However it took me a very long time to settle into my current college, and I don't want that to happen again, and threaten my chances of good grades. There is also no guarantee that this other college is actually any better than my current one, making me think it would be silly to have to arrange applications, interviews, transport and EMA all for a college that is just the same, but in a different location. Also, I'm still able to visit my two closest friends, plus technology is what it is

Bottom line. If I stay in my current college, I will not be with my friends, and I won't really have anyone else either. If I go to the new college, I'll take a long time to settle yet again, which may mess up my final (very important) year, something that may not even prove to be worth it.

I'd like to make a decision by Sunday so I can get the ball rolling if I do decide to move, but I keep flitting from one decision to another...heeellllppp XD

Don't even think about it.
Stick with what is already working for you. So what if you won't have many friends at the current college. There's life outside of school and it will all be over in the blink of an eye when you'll move on.

Thanks so much for the reply!

To be honest, I'm thinking the same. I'd rather spend the year continuing with what works for me and not disturb anything...it's just the idea of them all being together somewhere else when I'm back in my college :P

It's weird how we all think we can't cope without the support of our social group or make new connections with people but of course it's nonsense. At the end of A levels you will be looking for a job or an apprenticeship or going on to university and making a whole new start with new people just as excited/worried as you and while it will be scary it will turn out fine. Follow your instincts, good luck.

Trust me, second year will fly by so quick its not even worth it to switch colleges for friends lol.
When you go Uni it'll get better, if you wanna socialise and study.

Plus I agree with what the user above has said.

Thank you. There were other factors as well as the friends thing, for example, my current college is very disorganised and inconsistent. But, as the above user said, whatever they're doing seems to be working for me...so I think I'll stay. Plus I found today who will actually also be staying on also, and I won't be 'alone' as I first thought.

I talked this through with family today and they have all raised the same points you have raised. Thanks again:smile:
Second year will be easier if you stay firstly because classes will be smaller with most people having dropped out (personal experience), you will make friends with people you didnt consider before. Secondly, you were clearly hanging around the wrong people if they all did worse and you did better and this has made you second guess your abilities and aim lower than you are capable of. Steer clear of these people, it may be hard but you need a reality check. Your future is more important than these failures. Stay at your current college ok dont follow your friends, are they even taking you into consideration in their decision to transfer? of course not

It's also highly unlikely the other college will do all the same exam boards and who will write your UCAS reference when they don't know you?

It's only nine months, you'll be fine

My friendship group in secondary school were a awful influence on my life. I did better than them in gcse, and was the only person to go to this local college, everyone else went to another, and tried to persuade me out of it. It changed my life, never have I been so thankful to be rid of them. May sound cruel, but friendships at this point in life are rarely lasting. In 12 months when everyone's disappeared to uni, and you've been pulled down to a worse uni because of them, you'll be left wondering why it was worth it. Trust me its not.
