Afraid I wont make friends at university? (Commuter)

Hi,
So im afraid I wont make much friends at uni as Im going to commute rather than live there, and from what I heard unless you're staying at university socialising and making friends is hard. Ontop of that I don't drink, and wont just for the sake of other people.

Is there any advice that commuters can give me?

Hello

It's a common misconception that you won't make friends, yes, it's harder but you can still make friends and it doesn't matter that you don't drink - you don't have too and it's good that you won't do it to 'fit in'. That's not what university is about.

Sure, you are commuting so it's going to make it a little harder but you'll make friends on your course as you all share at least one similar interest and you can study with them and hang out with them after lectures and such. Also, you can still attend Freshers events and make friends with people there - as Freshers events as basically massive social events. Also, you can join a society if you had the time and make friends there.

Best of luck!

I wasn't a commuter myself, but had a friend that was.

I think this is where social media is a huge help. We had a group; I posted on the Freshers' page asking who's studying the same subject as me, then I created a subject page where people could be added. It started from there; created a massive group chat and with that; you start talking and then you just start my talking about hobbies, meeting at Fresher's fair and so forth. One friend will introduce you to another and etc.

It doesn't matter whether you're a commuter or not, but you have to make yourself known. You've got to make sure you're asking or creating invites because if you just sit around and wait then you'll be waiting a long time since people will have already formed friendships.

So make sure you be as confident as you can. Yes it's horrendously awkward but whatever. Sit next to someone in a lec hall and just speak to them. I did this once, but I'm rubbish with names and faces so that didn't last too long.

But now that most people know where they'll be going, it's a great time to get yourself on Facebook and start joining Freshers' pages and introducing yourself like "anyone studying..." or "anybody else a commuter" etc etc. People will reply and then add them, and start talking. It all starts with a click sugar.

Good luck and enjoy it!
