I had AABB also at AS Level. I am a current Birmingham university student doing chemical engineering. As long as your predicted grades are at least AAA (likely) you will be fine .

Universities typically allow for a slightly lower grade (as long as it's only in one subject) around Clearing time, so don't worry.

Just make sure that your predicted grades are at least AAAA or A*AA (that's a typical offer from Birmingham) and make sure you aim for that or higher if you can, because people sometimes aim for a grade and then end up with a slightly lower one than they wanted. That way you'll end up with a bunch of offers.

Apply to all of the unis that you really want to go to this way, if something happens and you don't get the grades you need you can still apply during Clearing to other universities for the course (there's lots to choose from http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings?s=chemical%20engineering or http://university.which.co.uk/search/course?c%5Bsubject_l2%5D%5B%5D=H810 ).

A Chemical Engineering degree is a Chemical Engineering degree, employers will still want you regardless of which institution you go to, as long as you get at least a 2:1 there (doing a year placement or Summer placements will help you too when you're at uni). Just make sure it's a place you'll be happy in.

Also understand that universities sometimes put their grade requirements up because that way they get more points in league tables, then they drop them later on when accepting people.

Clearing seems an option then. In comparison to a popular course like medicine, how high is the demand for spaces for Chemical Engineering?

Mate speaking as a current student of Birmingham, they just want your money ngl. They will let you in with AAB or above as long as u put them as your firm choice on UCAS. There are some mugs with ABB in my year which is 3 grades lower than AAA offers they were giving.

Trust me. Just make sure your predicted grades are at least AAA and they will give you an offer in my opinion.
