I'm confused about societies in university

I was looking at all the available societies that my university has to offer and was interested in a number of them. For instance I'm interested in the feminist society and the indian society as im indian- BUT- what do people actually do in such societies. For instance if I was to join the indian society I cant really think of what we might talk about. Is it leaded by a member who starts a debate or do you just rock up and do you own thing there with other members? Also how often do these societies meet because I heard by someone once a year? If thats the case I dont see the point as I wont make many friends then lol
Obviously it depends on the members, but I would say that the Indian society possibly celebrates Indian culture, food, maybe organises trips, etc.

Feminist is likely to be more political

Don't go mad at freshers. All sorts of societies are aiming on getting members as their funding depends on so many members. Often people go a bit crazy and sign up to all sorts then never turn up- or go to one event.

Before you sign up, just ask them what sort of stuff they do.

So do you meet at a set time- for instance every monday's or just when your informed about events?
What are you experiences with societies?
I'd have joined societies if I had known the value of socialising back then...

If you're not a natural "socialiser", just join one to begin with, you wouldn't want to get overwhelmed so early into your degree

It most likely differs between universities but most should be "open door" as in, join at any time, no obligation to attend every week (but more beneficial if you do)

That sounds like a barrel of laughs. :mmm:

Generally though, societies do tend to have a 'leader', and it is them who usually have the responsibility of thinking of good stuff to do, e.g planning outings.

When you sign up at the freshers-event-thing, there's probably going to be people standing at their little stalls to tell you about what they do. What they do and when they do it can vary massively between groups. Usually there will be the most meetings at the start of the year due to making friends and stuff, which may gradually decline as you go into the exam period.

Your Student Union will probably have its own online page designated for student societies which details them and provides contact details for those who want to join but didn't join straight away. Some societies have their own Facebook pages and stuff.

Just have a laff, innit.

There are usually events in Freshers week where you can find out about and join societies, but they usually welcome members throughout the year.

Hello

The majority of university societies are run by students, for students. Depending on the society they will make their timetable of how often you meet - some meet a couple of times a meet, others once a week and then some a couple of times a month and so on, it just depends on the society in question.

Usually, you have outings together, there is debates and so on and so fourth. Like I said, it depends on the university - there are usually Freshers Fairs at the beginning of university and the majority of societies are there and you can ask them questions and such.

Good luck

it really depends on who runs it members etc etc sports clubs usually meet one or twice a week or even more wit an extra meeting if there's a competition the two you mentioned sound to me to be.

The Feminist Society sounds like a debater or pseudo political party promoting woman's rights equality etc (which I'm all for) maybe even guest pro feminism speakers like Janet Street Porter or Malina. either that or it just a lot of militant men haters (which I'm not all for being a man myself).

The indian Socity seems more like learning about the history and indan culture maybe including meals eating in local Indian restaurants and again guest speakers and things.

oh and most will involve a nights out clubbing and other fun things particularly the Indian society I was in Climbing and we had a coaching session with Neil Grisham.
