Computer Science at Durham University or University of Southampton?

I am quite confused since both have their own appeal. Both have a strong computer science department and attract good students. However, I'd like to know what those residing in UK think about Comp Sci at both the universities.

Spoiler

But no seriously its not about what others think, its about what you think is best for you because you're the one who has to study there!Visit them on an open day or ask current students but make sure you know what you are looking for in their course/the Uni itself

same applies but maybe instead of going to an open day - look at the prospectuses and if u still have more questions, i know there are a few uni representatives on tsr but you can always just email a member of the department by looking on the uni websites
I hope you find something that helps u to make your mind up

Durham is better in many aspects.
Durham is ranked 5th in the UK and 61st in the world, Southampton is ranked 17th in the UK and 81st in the world. Durham is pretty, Southampton is horrible. Durham is massive for sports, Southampton not so much. However, Durham is small so the nightlife isn't as good as in Southampton (or you can just go out in Newcastle which is miles better than Southampton obviously).

I have seen and checked both the universities online several times. Since I want to do Comp Sci MEng and not bsc, both seem to be good for that. I have heard from people that the course at Southampton is competitive. However, Durham as a university looks better than Southampton. Both have somewhat same satisfaction and employment rate.
Southampton has the better department

And what do you base that on? Durham is fourth for computer science whereas Southampton is 8th (according to http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings?s=computer%20science)

national rankings are aload of rubbish. the fact they put st andrews in 3rd position and ucl in 8th should tell u that
As the above have said, rankings mean nothing St. Andrews' course isn't even accredited and I'd actually put Imperial ahead of Cambridge for the top spot in the country. Last year Durham was ranked far below Southampton in the complete university guide. Durham is a good university and it would be a better choice than Southampton for many subjects but for Computer Science it's really a no-brainer. I'd go with Southampton if I were you, forget rankings and the prestige of these universities overall. ECS is Southampton's strongest department(and this shows in the investment it gets) the course is a lot more flexible and you can specialise earlier onp.s Don't forget to compare individual modules of the courses at both universities as well

Sorry but it seems to me that this post must be a joke. How can Southampton compare to Durham in anyway? Durham is prestigious, Southampton is average. If you want to hold an impressive degree, Durham it is. If that doesn't bother you, I suggest you should visit both unis and look at each course and figure it out from there.

Good lucccckkkkkk!!

I would defo say that Southampton has the stronger department. A lot of people may tell you to pick Durham because they're blinded by league tables and overall prestige. Look at the modules for each course and see what would appeal to you most.
