The Student Room Group

Do you talk to freshers? My little message to all of them:

Obviously not a question for people just starting or who just finished their 1st yr.

I just feel weird speaking to them when they come up to me, they act like The Inbetweeners on holiday or something. Like they're either really confused or really anxious or trying to not look anxious and doing thirsty stuff, and so it ends up being a bit awkward around them, for me personally (I'll be starting my last year in sept and I'm kinda dreading encountering freshers :\ or maybe I'm just in a bad mood, dunno lol) but anyways.

But like there's just things that only freshers do.

Like there was one lecture and before it started there was this one kid who was just smiling real hard and looking around like a kid at disneyland.

You always knows someone's a fresher if they do too much during lectures like constantly calling answers out or something eugh. And adding commentary and creating side discussions with the random person next to them.

They also invade personal space. Like I'll be at the library or something, and just minding my own business. Got my tea, my books, my own personal tech centre lol and then all of a sudden:

"Someone sitting here?"

I just look up at them like :curious: I mean Idk any like 3rd years who cramp around random people because they have learned it's just ****ing annoying. Bot not the noob. And so they're sat across from me just making hella noise taking their stuff out and looking at me like :colondollar:

-_-

They also like follow you after class. Jog up to you asking hella questions. Like I'm a tour guide.

Hmm let's see what else...they actually use the student caff. O___o

They're also the one to act all buddy buddy with the staff who I can tell just wishes they'd leave the office already.

They also hold up the queue with stupid questions.

And they always have too much papers. Just files spilling out their hands.

Some of them come too dressed up as well, that's what gets me. One dude came in a suit, we thought he was gtting married. So we just called him Briefcase Mong.

Idk they're just really annoying lol this isn't a rant either, this is serious business hehe.

So basically yea if you're gona be a 1st year avoid the annoying ****. Just walk in, take out your pen, paper, notebook, whatever, look forward, and shut up.
Well I wasn't excited for uni not even my 1st year so Idk about that buzz you might get your 1st couple weeks. I def was more social and participated more than now though but even in my 1st year other freshers annoyed me lol

I'm a fresher this year and turning 31, think I'll have 'kid in Disneyland' syndrome and definitely cafe as I'm a coffee addict, will try avoid the other traits though, cheers for heads up!! :colondollar:

31 yr old fresher holy days O___O lol just kidding. You should be fine though because of your age, it's the teenage freshers that do my head in more often than not like even during events at freshers week they're just extra with the behaviour :\ cuz they never drank before or something? Dunno. I just hate seeing the spectacle they make of themselves even though I laugh hehe. I'm sure at 31 you can handle your drink though...
m888 you was a fresher too

shut up
I'm dreading going back to uni and freshers are one of the main reasons. I despise the first month/6 weeks of term when the library is full of first years who think that it is a social hub and just sit and chat **** when everyone else actually has work to be doing.

First years: you do not have the hardest course and you are not the only people in the room. Yes, uni is new to you and it sucks at times, but gtfo of the library and complain in a cafe instead of the library, where people who actually have serious work to be doing are trying super hard not to throw you off the balcony.
Also going into third year and living in halls again. I find a certain breed of freshers annoying, and they are normally 18 and have never worked or done anything outside of school/college. They are annoying mostly because the tend to get really awkward when people are older than them, even if it's only a couple of years!
It's also annoying when after a few weeks of term you get freshers telling you they understand how the uni, security or members of staff operate better than you, and they are almost always wrong.

However worst than any fresher is the over protective parents. Ive had parents give me lectures on not letting their snowflake take drugs etc which always gets the same standard reply "im 24 they are 18/19 not my problem"

The worst parent award will always go to the mum who had a rant at residential services about moving her son out of a flat because a) the girl in room c's skirt was too short b) he should be entitled to more than one shelf in the fridge c) another one of the flat mates was drinking a beer at 11 in the morning therefore he's a bad influence, and there was more points that I can't quite remember anymore

So to sum up some freshers annoy me, but I hate their parents more:smile:

Lmaooo exactly. @chickenfoot being a fresher doesn't mean lacking common courtesy and sense on what a library is for. It's stuff like that that irritates me.
So freshers = year 7s haha. I've heard that one before. They're always so much worse when you're not one of them.

I'll be a fresher, but I'm not good with new people and socialising, so I'll be concentrating on staying out of everyone's way.
