Meningitis ACWY Vaccine

I believe their thinking is that the over 25's will socialise less? Which is disgusting. Most of us will want to make the most of the new environments and opportunities. I'm not entirely sure if there is a reason why over 25's can't have it. Did you ask why when you phoned?

My mum phoned to tell me about it as I have a compromised immune system, I keep forgetting to phone up about it to be honest. All depends if the vaccine is live or not whether I can have it. I'm 29 but I will phone on Tuesday to find out.

I have a compromised immune system as well as I'm on immuno-suppressant medication, hence why I'm worried at picking up Meningitis.

I've checked with the hospital nurses who help me to manage my condition and they said that it's NOT a live vaccine so it is safe to have. (MMR is a live vaccine for example - some Uni's recommend you have that as well if you haven't had it before).
The only reason given why I couldn't have it was that I was over 25 (I'm 32) no other reason was given, so it must be about money, which I agree is disgusting. We can catch it just as much as anyone else!
I'll be ringing up my surgery again on Tuesday to kick up a fuss about it.

Yeah, I'm also taking immunosuppressant's. Hmmm. Yeah.. I've not had the MMR. I've not had any vaccines since I was a baby as I've been on immunosuppressants most of my life.

Maybe speak to your consultant that deals with your condition, see if he can contact your GP surgery. OR, make an appointment to see your GP and get them to either give it to you or make the appointment for you.
Receptionists at my surgery think they run the place usually.

Are there any other mature students over 25 and just about to start their first year of Uni who are getting, have had, or have been offered, the meningitis ACWY vaccine at their GP surgery?

I've read articles on the NHS website, on UCAS, my University website and had emails from UCAS saying that ALL new students starting University for the first time this September should be getting the Meningitis vaccine, but for some reason it's not being offered routinely to anyone over 25 on the NHS.
Seems a bit strange as the risk factors are listed as mixing with lots of new people for the first time, socialising more etc, which over 25's will be doing just like the under 25's. I can only assume that funding on the NHS is the issue.

When I tried to book an appointment to have it done at my GP surgery, I explained that I fit all the criteria for having the vaccine but I was over 25 and the answer was a straight 'NO', which is discriminatory IMO.

I'm 28 and I was given it. No charge. No questions. Didn't even mention that I was over 25. I hope u get sorted.
