Are there any asians studying in the parkside building at the city centre campus? It will be awkward if I am the only one. I don't know anyone who is doing the course I am and from what I've seen on the website and social media, there's all white students studying the course I am going to be studying.

You definitely won't be the only one  As we said, we have a very diverse student population here!

It might vary per course and for each year group but on the whole we have a very diverse student population

There's quite a large percentage of Asian people studying at BCU, it's quite likely there's going to be some in your group at uni, even if there isn't, you'll have plenty of opportunities to socialise with Asian people outside of class.

I'm not bothered about socialising. I just don't want to be the odd one in my group.

I've just seen your other thread about starting uni

Everyone is going to be a little nervous about starting, I can't imagine how it must be feeling for you when you've struggled with anxiety in the past. Don't worry about what other people think about you doing the class, they won't bat an eyelid as they'll be focused on getting settled themselves and a few may even feel the same way as you. You won't be the only mature student on that course (and 23 is a pretty young "mature" student), you'll find there will even probably be people older than you on it.

You've got a place on the course you want to do through your own merit and hard work, you deserve your place in that class, don't talk yourself out of it before you've even started. You're not obliged to stay, so even if you started and hated it you can leave, but at least give it a try.

Good luck

Thanks but I'm not 23, I'm a year older and my birthday is coming up next year too so technically I'm nearly two years older.

It doesn't matter, there'll be people the same age and older. I was 29 when I went to uni and there were people in their 50s studying the same course.

I hope the same for the students in my group and thanks for your comments.

I think uni is different to school in that bullying due to ethnicity, and that too in a place as diverse as birmingham, won't be an issue. Have u been bullies before or something? Im asian and i come from a predominantly white area and i can say with full confidence that no one has ever made me feel odd or different. This country is great

Plus racism is taken very seriously at uni. There is zero tolerance for it. Samzy where are u from?
