The Student Room Group

Does claiming job seekers allowance make you look bad to employers or loan companies?

I am planning on applying for JSA, but nervous about it going on record and it making me less attractive to employers, or lowering my student loan (I'm on a gap year, applying for university next year). I read that employers will know if I claim JSA on something called a P46 (http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1482512). Any information appreciated.

The pay clerk in HR will know, after you've been hired. No-one will know during the recruitment process.

Thanks for your reply, I don't mean to sound rude but how do you know this? Doesn't this document indicate I would have to tell them? http://orr.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0014/5603/hmrc-p46.pdf

It works like this -

Job application
Interview
Job offer
Contract
then - if they are efficient before you start, but usually on day 1, you bring in your P45/P46 and you take it to HR (or accounts, depends where the pay clerk sits) and say Hi, this is me, here's my P45/P46 and my bank account details. If the bother to read the form and make a judgement, they will know you were probably on benefits, or what you previous salary was.

They chose to work in this area, they know this 'secret' information on everybody, the same as someone else in HR knows the details behind everyone's DBS checks and who has a criminal record etc. They don't last long in the profession if they divulge this sort of information.

You are worrying about absolutely nothing, the information is shared with one professional who also knows this information about everyone in the organisation, and much more, and they only know about it once you have been selected for the job.
You only provide financial info to your employer (bank account details, P45 etc.) when you already have a job offer. They do not take your current financial status into consideration when deciding who to hire or reject.

As far as loan companies go, and I'm assuming you mean taking out credit for something, they will take your income and credit history into consideration and may reject you if they feel you won't be able to keep up with the repayments.
