Anyone concerned with how they will cope with the course financially now the nursing bursaries have been cut?

On the other hand, do you think there will be less competition for uni places now as some can't afford to study nursing?

To be honest, I'm so unclear about how funding works now with Nursing. I was under the assumption that instead of receiving NHS bursaries etc, you just go through student finance, but that's it's actually a benefit rather than a loss? Like every website I have visited says that the loans for living costs would be higher now than on an NHS bursary?

Uni: Kings College London (2017 place confirmed)
Experience: I'm currently a support worker in a residential care home. I help care for elderly people, many of which have dementia.

However before I applied and was given an unconditional offer from KCL I didn't have any experience within the care industry.

Well in the short term yeah you have more cash in hand to spend but the point is the loan is repayable and the bursary wasn't. You'll likely be paying off that student loan for the next 20 years after graduation, but a nurses salary isn't going up to reflect that change.

Previous experience: I have worked in various residential and nursing care settings for 15 years. Including EMI, elderly frail, Palliative, and rehabilitation care. Currently a senior care worker in a residential, and Emi care home.

Unis applying to: Coventry, Chester, Bristol (UWE), Northampton and University of South Wales.
Experience: Only experience related directly to nursing is a day of shadowing a Specialist Nurse Practitioner who works for a LD team. I've volunteered for a well over a year at a Special Education Unit and at a youth club for young people with learning/physical disabilities... I am quite worried this experience won't be enough.

Hi eda-bsm

It really depends on what type of nursing you're interested in, what types of qualifications you've gained (I'm assuming they're A levels) and the grades you have in each subject. Any GCSEs or level 2 qualifications will usually be taken into account as well.

If you'd like some advice about whether your qualifications will be considered for our nursing degrees, send us a private message and we'll look into this for you.

You probably would be able to get into nursing. I've been given an unconditional offer for maths, business and health and social care. At the time I also didn't have any experience.

I had a levels in History, Media Studies and Drama, a degree in primary education and some personal and professional care experience and I've received an unconditional offer from Edge Hill!

Previous experience: Nothing clinical as of yet but I have had some experience of volunteering in a nursery in the past and I am now a volunteer in a care home which specifies in caring for dementia. Other than that it's been very difficult to get placements in a hospital or NHS trust and that is the main reason I'm applying for nursing instead of midwifery! I'm worried that I wouldn't get it!

I think it's better that they don't have nhs bursary anymore,as technically we are entitled to more money to help us during our studies. I do understand that most of this will need to be paid back though.

Does anyone know how many more places unis can offer on nursing courses?

You'll have to pay it all back. I suspect there will be very few extra places on courses because the practicality of arranging placements with mentors is at bursting point (certainly in London) with the number of students who are currently being trained, without adding an extra x number into the mix.

Doe this mean if I apply for adult nursing I won't be able to get NHS Bursary and it will be same as applying for any other course that's there ?
If you start your course during Sept 16,Jan 17 and march 17,then you can still have the bursary. If not,then we will be just like any other course,come Sept 17. X
I agree about the pressure on places, I can't see space for many more nursing students here in the South west either.
I think the 'extra places' that the conservatives promised was just an excuse to take away the bursaries and make nurses pay their own tuition. I bet a nurses salary will not go up either despite this increased student debt. It's esentially a pay cut for nurses!
