Hi JenniB22,

Southampton would be my first choice for GEM. I got 786 average on the UKCAT so I'm feeling quite confident about getting an interview. I'm volunteering at the QA one afternoon a week currently - would you say that was sufficiently 'hands-on'? I'm helping out in a day clinic looking after patients and running errands to the pharmacy and path labs.

Also what didn't you think of he interview process? At Notts they are very helpful with prompts, but at the St. George's interview last year they were just awful.. either talk for 5 minutes or sit in silence 😂

Flag any question you don't think you have an idea about in the first 5-10 seconds & come back at the end - don't dwell on any too long. I ended up quickly & randomly answering A to most of my flagged qu's at the end in the last 20 seconds & did fine! Good luck!

Hey again GEM thread

Do you need a sky-high UKCAT score (like 760+) to make up for dodgy A-levels and questionable undergraduate academic achievement? I got 62% overall in my BSc Chem, having to retake my 3rd year due to circumstances that took place in my industrial placement year. Do admissions tutors even scrutinise the fine events of your previous degrees or just see 2:1s and 1sts? I'm not keen on ringing up admissions offices to ask about this stuff in case I'm bringing up things that would not be noticed otherwise.

I have about 1 1/2 years of (paid) work experience at this point and a MSc in which I got a distinction, but a lot of university websites don't make any mention of considerations for postgraduate degrees.

VR 690, QR 710 & AR 730, & then band 1 in SJ, which was a lot better than any practice I did at home during revision!

I can't say for sure as it depends on the deciles, but you'd probably have been safe the last couple of years. I found the interview really good, it was my favourite one. Interviewers were friendly, asked lots of interesting questions, gave me space to talk where I wanted to and moved on when I had less to say.

Yeah your ukcat is excellent so you should be safe for an interview provided you have your 2.1 and a C at A level chemistry. I think Southampton publish something about what they expect for work experience, and yours sounds like it would be fine, but check the guidance to be sure!

I was wondering if you guys would be able to help me fill my fourth gap! I am hoping to apply for Southampton Warwick and Birmingham GEM programmes but i don't know what to do about the fourth one... I got 720 average on my UKCAT (VR 640, QR 800, AR 730), a 2.1 in a science degree, B at a level chemistry and I've been a HCA in surgery for just over a year plus some shadowing experiences with junior doctors. To be honest everywhere seems to be just a little bit out of my reach!!

Everyone seems to be doing really well, hope everyone is successful :smile:

I've got what feels like some bad news..
the current cut top decile score is 2190. I emailed Newcastle to see where that would put me in relation to previous years.

A101
2011 – 2810 (702 average)
2012 – 2810 (702 average)
2013 – 2900 (725 average)
2014 – 3070 (767 average)
2015 - 2910 (727 average)
2016 - 2880 (720 average)

Now all of these effectively correlate to the top decile scores for their year e.g. The top decile score of 2180 in the 2013 UKCAT relates to the 3070 cut off for 2014 entry.
Meaning if that UKCAT averages don't fall this year further than the interims released yesterday then the cut off is likely to be 780+ which is basically ridiculous.

err, i'm not a medic applicant but those numbers seemed very fishy to me as the cut off would be above the 9th decile which doesn't make sense...

but i found this:

These were sent to me from a Newcastle admissions admin. Think you might be referring to the undergrad course though:

the correct score to compare would be 3030

3070/3030 = 1.3%
therefore, if you wanted to project to 2017 then 2190 * 1.013 = 2219
2219/3 = 740 average

Can I just ask where you've got the 3030 off? I'm all up for clarification if it puts my mind at ease haha.
But I've just purely worked it from the averages (so already excluding DM), so the 726 average (2180 w/o DM) equates to the 767 (3070) cutoff. So what I'm saying is if the top decile is rising to 2190 then the cut off is likely to rise with it.

I don't know if that makes much sense, I'm running on 3 hours sleep

Can I maybe bombard you with a multitude of questions?
How long a go did you apply, what was your UKCAT Score, what work exp did you do, what did they do/ask at interview, was it MMI or single station, when was your interview and when did you get your offer?
