18 to 21 year olds, is 28 years old too old to live in halls?

im 18 and i have friends ranging from 18-40 . Its fine man.
****, I hated halls when I was 19, turning 20 for that reason.

It depends on your character though I guess. A friend of mine went to uni for the first time around that age, stayed in halls and really enjoyed some of it, but also got upset by the lack of life skills some of them had.

Hi there,

I have been to uni before, but it was my backup choice and I didn't get the chance to stay in a proper hall. I graduated at the age of 25 with a BA . Now I am going back to do a masters but I have opted to stay in halls, I'm 28 years old.

I chose halls because it was a little cheaper and I want to be part of the social experience that comes with living in halls and I am really worried that 28 is simply too old for that.

Is it? I feel that if the second oldest person on my floor is no older than 21, then I'm just going to be viewed as the creepy older guy that no one wants to socialise with.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No it's fine 18+ is the age where you mingle with adults (work ect) without them being an authority figure over you, like when under 18 (teachers etc).
Fitting in wise depends on how mature you are, don't act 'the parent'

I'm having this problem, will be 27 when going into halls next year. I'm going to be doing a pretty intense course and wanted to be right by the school. At the same time just a bit nervous how my age will be received.
I've been studying at an FE college for the past 3 years and managed to make friends, there have been times where the age gap has been really notable.
Although most people assume I'm about 19 anyway. One of the girls I made friends with, her favourite game is getting people to guess my age. There aren't many mature students at my college.
I'm thinking of just applying to get a bigger room then at least I can have my own space in my room but then still get the social side of halls. I want to make friends still!!
Im not in halls, but in uni course (in london) there are many people living in halls that are a little older! I've met a couple girls who are 26 + 29 (I'm 20) and a guy who's 27. They all live in halls, and they fit right in. I didn't even notice that they looked older as uni is such a diverse place anyway.
Personally I wouldn't want to live with 18/19 year olds now (I'm 27). Although I had no issue with it when I wen to uni at 22. The gap is just too large now and kids that young can be a pain to live with.*

First time round I was 18 and there was a lady in our halls (I say lady because to me she seemed so much older than me!) *who was 26. She did do her best to intergrate but she was very picky about things like dishes being done and the place being spotless because she was used to living on her own and being tidy. So this lead to her clashing with us quite a lot.*

If you're not particularly bothered about mess, vomit on the toilet seat and necking the odd dirty pint then I'd say go for it. Are there not postgrad halls you could go to instead where there would be a stronger work ethic and less partying? *
As long as you feel comfortable then I don't see how people would be that affected by your choice to live in halls. Im guessing there was no graduate halls at your uni as at some places they have students halls reserved for the postgrads
I'm going into halls at 27 next week and a bit sceptical to say the least.

I've applied for the ones that have a mixture of postgrads and undergrads rather than the student village that's first years only, so hopefully I won't be the only geriatric there.

Thank **** I've got an en-suite is all I can say reading some of the posts here.

Cool, are you starting this year or have you already experienced halls at 28?

To the rest of you ( OP included ) Be prepared to be thought of and labelled as....

the creep
Its not too old, however you will probably find the young'uns annoying at times. Their youthful energy may be just what you need but be prepared to listen to stupid drink-fueled arguments and unnecessary drama happening outside your door/window. Plus regular fire alarms because some people don't know how to cook/use a microwave properly.

My University has a lot of mature students (25% ish) so there are a couple of buildings which are only populated by students over 20, sounds like your Uni might not be the same but if your flat mates are unbearable you might be able to change. Also some unis have studio flats which are great if you want to be near the uni/involved in all the action but have your own quiet private space to chill.

Hey what kind of halls are you in?? I'm gonna be 25 when I start uni, thinking of a UoL uni but I'm not sure if I'd fit in halls though I am a party person :teehee:

Sorry if i wasn't clear, Im not actually living in halls - Im staying at home because I live in Central London and my Uni isn't too far. I think London is different to Uni's elsewhere in that it is extremely diverse. It attracts people from all around the world, and although most students start year 1 at the age of 18-21, there were many people in there mid to late twenties who were able to integrate without any issues. Therefore I think students here develop quite an open-minded approach to all sorts of people. I think you will enjoy halls, especially if you like to go out.

Thank you  Have you found it's easy to make friends if you don't live in halls? My cousin is actually in London too so I was thinking of sharing with him if I don't go in halls.

I'm glad to hear that, so the international environment attracts lots of mature students too? Do you mind if I ask what uni? Looking at UCL and City :yep:

I haven't had any problems making friends - a lot of my friends actually live at home too. I would point out though that a lot goes on within halls as they see each other everyday, but if I cared about joining in it wouldn't be a problem. No one is judgemental about it.

Yes there are a lot of mature students, both local and international. Im at UAL (University of the Arts London), but a lot of the people in halls share with other London university students which is quite nice.

That's reassuring to hear, thanks again

Yeah I'm thinking of intercollegiate halls, heard theyre more friendly :yep:
I was 27 when I moved into halls. My experience wasn't great, but that was more for personal reasons rather than to do with any of my flatmates. Does your university have any halls/flats that are allocated for mature students? I know that some do reserve them so older students can be grouped together.

I've not even read what you put above because it's not important. As long as you're sound, I'd hang out with you like anyone else - that's probably true for everyone
