Durham kept up by some Stokes brilliance, but Buttler can't inspire Lancs.
Haseeb Hameed called up to the squad then, despite being just 19 (and looking even younger). Based on his interview on sky sports he seems to have a good head on his shoulders, and appears to be more of an old fashioned open. Could be a big player for England in the future.
No surprises with the squad - except, perhaps, Batty's inclusion 11 years on from his debut.
Hameed is an exceptional talent and I fully agree with Bayliss: if he's good enough, he's old enough. Let's hope he can become a new Cook or Root. It's amazing that he's included and going to Bangladesh when he started the season relatively low-key and had disappointment missing out on the Under-19s squad if I recall correctly.
I do have worries about his slow scoring rate, because international attacks very rarely give you the chance to score that slowly. Still, he's such a talent and this is massively exciting - as is Duckett's inclusion, with his ability in both red-ball and white-ball just phenomenal.
Ansari also included, after enduring disappointment earlier this year when he left the squad through injury. He and his Surrey teammate - Batty - are both a part of the squad, and you imagine the 38-year-old is being picked to help the younger spinners and bring in experience. It's a shame for Leach, though, who was the leading wicket-taker with the spinning ball at County Championship level this season (58 Championship wickets at a cost of 22.60 this season). Jennings and Foakes also unlucky to miss out, in my opinion.

Whitaker says his role in revitalising England’s limited-overs sides since the 2015 World Cup as one of the chief reasons why.

Still think it's a ****ing joke that the ECB gave players a 'free choice' and then senior figures are expressing their disappointment and saying their places will be under pressure.
It's ridiculous - but I can't help thinking this wouldn't be such a big deal if Morgan wasn't Irish born. He has always been a rebel type, and not one to toe the party line.

Haseeb hameed to open for me. I just want to make sure he doesn't get pressured or unnecessarily stressed out - allow him to fail once or twice, like KL Rahul, duck on debut.
Seems like Hameed isn't a shoo-in. After all, Duckett will get the first chance to impress when he replaces Hales in the ODIs, and apparently he's a more Bayliss-type player.

So, here we go. The County Championship final round, with Middlesex and Yorkshire - who both meet at Lord's - vying for the title, and Somerset boasting an outside chance.
Of course, Middlesex have been inspired by Rayner this season, but Yorkshire have been there and done it and have title winning experience. You imagine they will miss Rashid and Bairstow, though, while Somerset have Leach, the second leading wicket-taker.
- If Middlesex beat Yorkshire, they will be champions, regardless of the result of Somerset's match.
- If Yorkshire beat Middlesex, they will win the title provided they at least match the number of points Somerset take.
- If Middlesex and Yorkshire draw, then Somerset will win the title if they win with at least 23 points.
- Somerset can win the title with fewer than 23 points if Middlesex do not earn maximum bonus points in a draw with Yorkshire.
- Should any teams finish level on points, most wins determines placing, then fewest defeats. All three have won five games. Somerset would have fewer defeats than Yorkshire if they both win and Somerset would also have more wins than Middlesex if they win and Middlesex draw.

Yorkshire preparation not ideal with the issue of Rashid's withdrawal and for what reason it was whether it was family reasons or tiredness, bit of both I would imagine. Surprised Gale made it public but their relationship doesn't seem to be the strongest remembering a previous disagreement between the pair

I think it's poor Bairstow isn't playing - but, regardless of the magnitude of the fixture, Rashid has every right to put family first.
It's a shame, though. As usual, the ECB are just shooting the punter by doing things like this. It's a real shame for Yorkshire, especially with Finn set to play.*

NZ and India go head to head in the first Test of their series on Thursday. It's good to have red ball cricket back after a few weeks break.
You imagine the hosts will run through New Zealand, who despite being poor in India historically, are unbeaten in their last three series on Asian soil.
Kohli really enjoys playing against NZ, to make matters worse. His average against them is his highest against any international side. He's averaging 85, which is impressive, but NZ can take solace in the fact Williamson averages 155 against spin.
The pitch is set to be a raging turner, by all accounts, which may suit New Zealand. They have decent spin options - as represented by their World Twenty20 success - in Sodhi.

An interesting first day. At 4pm i would have put my money on Yorkshire and Somerset both winning, but the late Somerset collapse and Middlesex's post tea performance making it less certain.

India didn't surprise me at all by opting to bat, obviously, as the pitch is bound to deteriorate and the groundstaff admitted it would be a raging turner by day three and four. NZ did really well after being forced to bowl, though. India were well placed at the start of their 500th Test.
At 154 for 1, I thought it would be a procession for them, but NZ have the tools in Wagner, Sodhi and Santner to cause real problems. In truth, I probably wouldn't have used such a spin-heavy attack so early. They were relying on their turners from minute one, seemingly, but it all worked out in the end as India conspired to fall to 291 for 9 by stumps.

Somerset have done all they can!
Only just realised it's Pakistan vs WI in the ODI series tomorrow. That promises to be a cracker, with Pakistan trying to replicate their red-ball form in the limited overs set-up.
The Windies will be without Andre Russell and Chris Gayle, but can place their faith in Evin Lewis, who really impressed when opening for them against India in Florida last month.
Likewise, Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran are two exciting young players pushing for a starting berth, and they've still got Dwayne Bravo to sprinkle some magic dust.
Pakistan will be reliant on Sarfraz, you imagine, with the pitch set to be dry and slow.

Fascinating day in the County Championship.
Yorkshire kept their title hopes alive at Lord's, posting 390 all out after Bresnan's magic innings. He carried his bat on 142 not out at the end of the innings, before the away side restricted Middlesex to 81-2 by stumps. Bresnan helped Yorkshire rack up four bonus batting points - potentially vital points, at that - with some help from Azeem Rafiq and Ryan Sidebottom.
Middlesex began their reply abysmally, with Sam Robson and Nick Compton dismissed in the first and second over respectively to leave the hosts on 2-2, before they recovered with Nick Gubbins on 38 and Dawid Malan 37. And while Middlesex, though they steadied themselves, haven't played like champions, Somerset were remarkable.
They completely dismantled Nottinghamshire - thanks largely to Dom Bess yesterday and Jack Leach today, who picked up four wickets to add to that wicket taking tally.
Notts only managed three wickets today before Somerset declared, with Chris Rogers announcing his retirement (what a career he has had, finishing with 25,470 runs which included 76 centuries) after posting a century, helping Somerset win by 300+ runs.
