What is a constitution?

mods plz move this to whereever the politic section is.


basically...im doing history 18/19th century.
i know that a constitution is a set of laws used to govern a country.
then the french revolution took place where people asked for a constitution or something like that. which got me thinking, werent the laws under the monarchy a constitution (a set of laws)
or am i missing something here?
A constitution is typically made when a country is just being founded which sets out the most basic laws of the country such as the American constitution which gave people their basic human rights. In the french revolution, they were pushing for the creation of a new republic and the constitution of this country should guarentee basic rights and freedoms for all.

ok thanks, but under the monarchy (bourbons before revolution), didnt they have laws too or was it ''going with the flow'' - whatever pleases the king will get passed, that kind of thing?

A constitution is a set of laws that organise the political life, especially the government (it usually lists its powers and restraints). It's not a normal legislation (it cannot be changed with a simple majority) and constitutional laws are superiors to other laws (a law cannot contradict the constitution).

In the case of France, there was no constitution because the king was an absolute monarch. So even a list of his powers would have in fact limited them.

in romania we once had a prime minister who proposed a law that would allow the govnt to change the constitution whenever they wanted:|
