When did I say that we should do a Germany and take 1 million people in a year?

You were implying that britain is shameful for not being like germany and taking as many people as they do.

Because it's not them getting killed

Are you serious? You could not sound more stupid right now.
I believe it is the combination of

a) desensitisation due to being overloaded by media all these years of all sorts of atrocities.
b) the realisation that we can't really do anything to change it.

Yes I could join some rallies and what not to show my disgust at what is going on in the world, but if I truly believe it won't do anything, am I not only doing it for show?

I don't think that you should ignore the issue - but when I find out what I can do to actually help, im sure I'll act upon it.

Not at all. I just don't think 20,000 refugees is enough.
This is my opinion:

I agree with @mkap
I know that we can't do anything for them but where's the sympathy?
If that happened to Europe or any place that affected you, wouldn't you show sympathy? It's saddening to see all these people saying"Why should we?"
But if that happened to a place that affected you wouldn't you show sympathy? This is children-innocent children- getting killed. At-least show some sympathy towards them.

Note to haters: hate all you want, tbh idc:smile:

No. It started long before that when the people chose the Assads, then chose to keep them.

People chose the Assads and wanted to keep them?!
Wow, had no idea the tyrants of the middle east were giving people so much freedom and choice.
Choice being accept our rule or die?!

And what makes them different to the probably half a billion other people facing similar problems in the world.

Haven't 4 million died in the Central African Republic for example?

True, but isn't much we can do about that. Lebanon, Jordan and the like have taken something like 4 million refugees over the past 2 years. Puts us to shame

*looks at map*

Ah, the places next door have taken lots more than the country literally the other side of the next continent

seriously i look at the news and it just depresses me and upsets me. Syria has been bombed now for the past couple of years and all we see is civilian deaths one after another and once in a blue moon we hear that an ISIS member has been killed.

is it really worth it i mean why are the russians so dumb bombing the few hospitals that are left (are they really that backwards at dropping missiles) and bombing houses leaving people with no food and water. it just makes me so angry seeing little children left without families and becoming orphans.

as a society we arnt doing much to help, we are closing our doors to them and saying they dont belong with us. we just close our eyes and just carry on with out individualist lives when these are out brothers and sisters

just look at these videos, do these people really deserve this? they might be a bit graphic

Spoiler

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrJ1Ac66Ru8

statistics: total death count in Syria:
450,000 - Children: 50,000 thats like the whole of Liverpool being wiped out

People do care. Civilians always get caught up in wars
"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—
and there was no one left to speak for me."

Cool story, the SYRIAN CIVIL WAR is definitely going to come and "take us"

Assad's father Hafez came to power in a coup. Bashar took over when he died in 2000. At what point did people "choose" the Assads?

That is obvious, well done.

The point is that the majority of people don't really care until it affects themselves and their loved ones.

These sort of things don't affect us as our ancestors fought for our freedoms and rights.

Something theirs should have done

So why then did we invade Iraq, liberate the Falklands, intervene is Bosnia, Korea, Lybia? Why do we accept the arbitrary spending of over £11bn on foreign aid? Or the accepting of but a single refugee?

You just want to argue pointlessly, don't you?

Let's look at this narrow point.

These people were either active in creating or acquiesced in creating a country that rejected democracy and good sense. As in many Moslem-dominated countries, democracy is anathema to them. They choose either undemocratic nationalist governments or Islamist theocracies, neither of which is conducive to peace and a thriving economy.

Even the various forces of the Syrian revolution largely seek repressive nationalist or Islamist governments rather than a modern democracy.

So, do the people of Syria deserve the inevitable consequence of extreme nationalism? You tell me.

Well, after seeing the mess they have made of their own country, why would we want to import large numbers of such people into Europe, which has been peaceful, stable, enlightened and thriving economically for a very long time now.

Not only do they bring alien ideas of government with them but they bring an alien culture still grounded in mediaeval superstition where religious observance is allowed to dominate life and to stifle the economy and well-being of the people.

I strongly sympathise with them on a personal level but the safety and stability of our own country is too important to risk by allowing the mass migration of such people.

So to put it briefly,

let them die.
