Stuck with boring flatmates

For the first days living in uni halls I wasn't able to enjoy freshers week as I hoped I would. Even though I was made sure that my flat would be an undergraduate flat, I have been put with 4 post grads and only 2 other under graduates. This would be ok at the most but 2 of the under graduates are from Hong Kong and just like the rest of the flat-mates they are not very sociable. Heck, they didn't even bother getting a freshers wrist band because they knew they wouldn't be going out. Now I have been on one night out where I was able to grab contact with some people but from then on I haven't really seen them around or spoke to them. Sometimes I would get the freshers reps to take me to another flat for pre-drinks or just before they were leaving for the party, which I enjoyed but sometimes I'd just follow the people from the flat around with them not really taking much notice. I'm trying to hopefully move rooms but right now it seems a long shot with most people already having a place and therefore not much demand.

Do they speak english? Have you tried chatting to them?

Why not advertise. theres plenty of students who would love a quiet place.
This is why I think catering halls are better thna nes just split into flas because its hit and miss. meal and rbeakfast times are very social and you see hundreds of people.

Im getting the impression you are in halls, but they are basically collections of flats with small communal ares i.e kitchens.

Catered tend to just have one dining area and some living rooms, so when you eat its a bit like school dinners and you cna sit down make friends more easily with people from all over. Its easier to make friends with toehrs even if they arent in your corridor imo.

Find other places to advertise and emphasise how quiet it is.

Yes I am in halls. See on most evenings, heck most of the day our kitchen is empty. People only really come in to cook food and take it out, that's why it annoys me when I look out the window and see people in other flats sitting around a table and drinking or eating together.

I'm in the same situation as you. I'm trying to make it a positive as i have a quiet place if i want it and i've made some friends in other flats and i'm planning to join a few societies!

They speak some english, well at least some of them and one of them does try to socialize but the rest make their food and then take it down to their room without reallly taking notice of anyone else in the kitchen.

There is no reason why anyone should only socialise with the people they have been put in a flat with. Flatmates sometimes just end up as acquaintances not friends as they don't have much in common. I mean, don't ignore your flatmates but just chat if you see them in passing.

Definitely take the guy from the other flat up on his offer. As you spend more time with other people who like doing the same things you do, who you see at the events you like, you will probably end up with a bunch of people in other flats you hang out with - that's what happened for me anyway

@tomekplnd I am in the exact same situation as you. I couldn't take it anymore and decided come back to London for the weekend. I will also try and see if can swap to different hall this week and speak to the accommodation team to see if swap is available Which university you go to? And which hall you staying at?

I'm at Nottingham Trent. I'm staying at these nice halls, located in the city with everything in range. The kitchen and room is nice too but it's just the flatmates. I look out the window and see people drinking and hanging around where as most evenings the kitchen is empty and I'm the only one drinking and the rest would be having green tea with literal leaves and flowers inside.

I am at same university as you very nice room I have and the kitchen is also very nice as well with TV but my flatmates cook there food quickly and run straight back into the room half the time the kitchen is empty. In the night while i sit in my room always see outside the window people having fun and socialising where my flatmates who i almost never seen expect for one Chinese girl and the rest i believe they are postgraduate and internationals students with myself and one or two undergraduate students. I am very socialable and easy person to get along with.

Judging by your username I believe your a post grad? I live in Gill street north btw.
