Cardiff University Medicine Applicants 2017

to summarise, to apply to A101 at Cardiff which is the GEM course you must have graduated with a 2:1 or above in the 4 feeder stream degrees which are:
- The BMedSci Medical Sciences Degree from the University of Bangor (B100)
- The BSc (Hons) Medical Sciences Degree, from the University of South Wales (B901)
- The BSc (Hons) Medical Pharmacology degree, School of Medicine, Cardiff University (B210)
- The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences degree, School of Biosciences, Cardiff University (BC97)
Dentist graduates can also apply for the GEM course with the aim of maxilliary-facial specialisation.

From what I can gather being on the course our graduates that join us in year 2 are all (bar a couple of dentists) from the 4 courses above, we did have graduates of other degrees at different universities join us in year 1 but they cannot join for A101 they join for the 5 year A100 just like everyone else. Cardiff specify these courses for the GEM I believe because they have great control over the content which they are taught within them, meaning they can prepare the students adequately for everything they will have missed out on during year 1 teaching (which is a heck of a lot of stuff, trust me).

Can you please try confirming if the the same point system will be applied to applicants with BTEC extended diplomas. I kinda feel left out since im not doing a levels haha

Im afraid it wont be if your grades for the diploma are predicted, and because your applying for A101 it may be very different in the way they rank candidates, you are much better asking the medical school yourself as my contact in admissions is currently on annual leave.

I've rung the medical school and they said they've very last minute decided A-Levels will be scored in the same way was GCSEs I.e 3 for A*, 2 for an A. It was a pleasant surprise because my academic score was 22/27 beforehand and I was pretty down about it but it's gone up to 29/27. I've rung on 4 different occasions just to be super sure. Do ask them again before you apply!

I wasn't able to apply to Cardiff last year because my score wasn't competitive with 5A*s and 5A's in my GCSEs - this gave me a score of 23 I think?
However this year I have just attained 3A's in my A2s. Would give me a score of 27/27?
Any help would be great!!

I am from Wales and Welsh is my mother tongue. At the Open Day someone mentioned that you get two extra academic points if you are from Wales, is this true? And I have heard that you can be taught a part of the course in Welsh... do you know how much of the course will be available in Welsh?

Hi I believe that would top up your score to 26 according to the sliding scale however 26 is an excellent score and academically you won't have any problems and as long as your PS is decent you should get an MMI.
If you like Cardiff I would definitely recommend you to apply

Just in response to your question sadly not much of the course is availible in welsh.

during years 1 and 2 the majority if not all of the teaching is performed in english, this includes lectures, labs, classes and placements. there are sometimes welsh SSC projects delivered solely in welsh but there are only a few out of the 70+ projects and it depends whether they take your fancy.

if you are a welsh speaker they do try to put you on placement in a welsh speaking area sometimes, but you have to express this as a preference, mainly rural communities in wales will allow this.

there are a good handful of students in my year who also have welsh as their first language and it doesnt seem to phase them that it is taught, sadly the vast majority of students at cardiff med school dont speak a word of welsh.

I just read the admissions statement and found out that people with overseas qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. In this case I have done my GCSEs in India and I'm doing a BTEC. Hopefully, I do not get ranked using the point system. I will email admissions to confirm.

its in the OP but:

best 9 GCSEs to include biology, chemistry, physics (or dual science), maths and english language plus the best remaining GCSEs (with no clashing subjects such as further maths) to make 9. an A* gets 3 points, an A 2 and a B 1 and the score is out of 27.

the past 3 years a score of 26/27 has been required to meet the cut off for interview, everyone below that cut off has their personal statement marked and the best personal statements go forward for a small number of remaining interviews.

Does statistics clash with maths?
