why do so many students want to study medicine?

It's a vocational course so a high percentage of people (98%) who take the course end up as Doctors.
It's highly respected and prestigious.
They gain a title (similar to point 2).
There is structured progression within the career which comes with an increase in pay.
They may simply not be aware of other fields in the bio-chem sphere and their limited exposure causes them to come to the conclusion that medicine is the only viable career.
Going to work to save lives sounds really cool :wink:

Reality Check

From the TSR it would appear that a lot of them are doing it for the money, which is most unwelcome. I also didn't realise that people actually did that! If you want to grub around for money, then go into banking or consultancy, for sure. If you want to do something worthwhile with your life then medicine is one way to achieve that.

I want to study medicine not because of the money (pay for junior doctors isnt that great anyway) but because of how rewarding a medical career is- your actions are constantly making a difference to others- you are very literally saving lives. To me a job could not get any more rewarding/exciting/interesting than that. (and my parents aren't asian lol-my dad didn't even go to uni)

because they think doctors get paid 100k a year when actually junior doctors get paid around 23k (28k in their second year as a junior doctor) and only get around 30k when they have specialised which is less than an accountant who works for the big 4 who gets 30k straight from uni LOL

Yeah, careers in medicine pay well. But, the thought that saving lives and helping people is what motivates me to have a career in medicine. I'm sure most people do too.

But for me it's a bit of a personal thing - lost family members due to a lack of healthcare so that's really been my drive. Otherwise I wouldn't have tried that hard at school tbqh would've went into science but not medicine. Reality is working conditions aren't great but if you're doing it for the right reasons then it can work. Plus patients usually have a favourite doctor - usually the one that is the kindest and genuinely believes their working for a good cause. You'll always get doctors who are just doing it for all the wrong reasons - these doctors don't tend to be that popular amongst patients and end up hating their job or go into research maybe. Or some of them continue to torture their patients with their bad attitude. :/

If I feel like I'm doing a **** job then I'll probably try something else, but I need to at least test my dream out. Plus I want to work in the voluntary sector so not much of >£100k salary in that sector anyway.
Richest doctors work in locum or surgery. 99% of Gps want to rip their hair out lmao.
