What is the point of a student loan?

Seeing as almost noone will ever pay it off why exactly do we have these ridiculous student loans and tuition fees? Surely it would be much simpler to just make education free.

About 40-50% will pay it off. The rest will make some payment towards it.

Seems totally unfair that people who get a decent job will end up paying it alll off, while if you do a *****y degree and cant pay it off you get rewarded by the debt being written off!
They need to write off the 30 years cap and make everyone have to pay ALL of it back

It is fair because. Everyone has the same terms and repayment rises inline with salary earnt.

Not meaning to be rude, but this is rather simplistic, 'simpler to make education free'. Nothing is 'free' - someone has to pay for it and the direction of travel now is that the student bears at least some of the cost of their education and this is done by discounted guaranteed government loans which are repaid gradually once you get a job earning a reasonable amount.

Though it would of course be nice to get it free, it's just not realistic or sustainable.

Which isn't fair because some people work hard demanding jobs after doing very demanding degrees where as some people do *****y degrees just for the sake of doing them?

Come on. How arrogant do you have to be to decree someone's education as '****'? Do you know anything about their ability? Do you know anything about how well they'd fair in the job market for their position of interest?

Seriously. There are unemployed LSE Econ graduates.. It's obviously not their degree that failed them, but they just didn't make the cut for the jobs they applied to. Which, at the end of the day, is the whole point in a 'market', employers want specific employees and just because you have an otherwise 'respectable' degree doesn't permit you a) an interview or b) if you get an interview, that you'll pass the interview process.

Everyone bar maybe Medicine/Nursing/Dentistry + allied health services graduates takes a gamble that they might just be able to get a job after their degree when they go to uni. All you can focus on individually is how to boost your own personal employability and not whether some degrees are '****' or not.

Fyi, most graduate jobs don't specify a degree subject.

A loan is just that, a loan

Everyone should be equally liable to pay it ALL

It's a graduate tax, not really a loan.
