LSE 2017 Applicants

Does anyone know whether they ask for Maths UMS for L101? If so, will they still do it if you already have your grades?

I'm applying from a gap year with:

A-Level: A*AAa (Maths/Physics/Politics/Business respectively - my school is shite and doesn't offer Economics A-Level hence Business, I also learnt all the AS Further Maths modules during A2 but didn't sit the exams as it wasn't part of my offer (elsewhere) at the time and didn't want to risk my A2 grades)
EPQ: A* (on EU federalism, large focus on international trade and monetary union aspects plus the political ramifications)
GCSE: 5A* 4A 1B (probably below average for an LSE applicant, but as I said my school is bad so this was actually the 6th highest set of results from about 225 students so I'm hoping this will work in my favour)

In my gap year I'm going to be studying A2 Further Maths and I'm also going to buy textbooks for both AS and A2 Economics and self-teach so I'm not behind, wish I'd done this earlier on tbh. Do you think just studying the units will be enough for them, or would they rather me actually sit the exams? I already have my A2s so I obviously could probably get A's, or even A*s potentially, if I did, but I don't want to run the risk of having these tagged onto offers at my other UCAS options just in case there's a disaster on results day and I end up missing it (particularly since I already meet the requirements without doing so). What do you guys think? It's clear in my reference that I will have the knowledge, but actually sitting the exams would probably look better. I'm a bit unsure as to what to do, since so many other applicants have FM and Econ A-Levels, although they aren't a necessity obviously.

Edit: For the people above, at Oxford a TSA score of 60+ will probably get you an interview for PPE, and for E&M it tends to be a bit higher at about 67ish. Offer holders usually score at least 65 for PPE, although many get 67-72+, and for E&M I assume it's similarly around 70+ for an offer. You also need to do well in the interviews, of course.

Hey,

They ask for Maths UMS of each module and the overall UMS of your other subjects, based on what I remember (as long as they havent changed it for the new process). So the UMS you get in subjects matter to them.

Your grades might be enough for them, but I still recommend you to do the exams. If you mention that you are taking those exams and end up getting an offer, it is likely that they will give a conditional offer on them, since they are relevant subjects. Therefore, it is up to you to decide to whether mention them or not. Obviously doing them is better.
This is just a thought though, they might not ask you to get an grade in it, but it is likely they do.

Your GCSE's look fine, dont worry.
However, I dont think mentioning that you were 6th from 200+ students is that valuable, so not worth mentioning I guess.

By the way, what courses and universities did you apply for last year? Where were you planning to go to? What made you change your mind about your course?

They ask for your UMS across all subjects? The only instance I've heard of is for Maths. Oh, well, good to know.

That's the dilemma I have; I know it will look better if I actually do the exams rather than just learning the content, but I'm really concerned about getting an offer and then some random disaster happening and I end up missing it due them making it conditional on those subjects. If they don't ask that I get a grade in it then that obviously takes away some of the pressure, but then I risk other places making an offer based on those too.

Perhaps not, but there's space on my reference so why not  My school is awful, which is the point I'm trying to get across to them lol

Oh, the edit is in answer to the people asking questions about TSA scores above. I went through the process last year and that information is fairly accurate based on what I've found online and my own experience.

I am applying to PPE at Oxford anyway, as I did last year. My subjects are fine for both Econ and PPE, they only prefer (or require in LSE's case) that you do Maths and prefer an essay subject as well, which I have. Sciences are just all-round good. As I said, I would have done A Level Economics had it been available to me at school. They duped me into thinking that Business would be a decent substitute, so me as a clueless year 11 took their word for it lol. In hindsight I should have definitely done Further Maths instead.

Last year I applied to Oxford/LSE/UCL/Warwick and Nottingham, for economics and PPE (Oxford only) like this year. My personal statement... wasn't great... and we got given no advice on how to write it, so I ended up with only a Nottingham offer  Over the past year I've done a lot of things to improve it and have already achieved the grades, so I'm much more confident this year.

Guys i have made a pretty big problem in my personal statement. :frown: :frown:

At the last paragraph I forgot to add a word like and it ruined the meaning of the sentence and will make people think asif I am applying to computer science program. I also made some grammatical error in it as well and my personal statement looks kinda quantitative because 80% of the personal statement is about how my interest grew in this area of subject

I am an international applicant from India .

In my tenth grade I got 95% in math (A*), 95% in economics (A*), 94% in Science (A*) and 86% in English (A I guess, I am not sure  )

I got a predicted grades of full A1 (A*) for my 12th boards from school.

Will i be facing any disadvantages because of my mistake in personal statement?

LSE can't really discriminate on Personal Statements that much because it acknowledges that different people have different amounts of support. If your grades are good, you should make a strong applicant

I am thinking of cancelling the application and to reapply to UCAS (I just submitted the UCAS application day before yesterday and reference hasn't been submitted yet). Will that be a safer option?

Received an acknowledgement from LSE today and then got another email saying my application went into "initial assessment" and a short while after that I was asked to fill in my UMS scores in a survey they sent me
Who is applying for economics AND economic history?

What is the 3rd subject?
If you want an honest answer then read the spoiler.

Third subject is physics. I may end up being predicted an A* in maths by the time my application is sent off but my early prediction (i.e based on AS only) was an A. I am actually quite interested in maths and have done a lot of programming and software development (including working with concepts you'd normally find in A Level Further Maths) which my personal statement has a paragraph on. Thoughts? Appreciate the honest response, thanks.

I got both those emails and they didn't ask for my UMS? Applying for international relations though.

Once you apply, go to UCAS and then if you want you can order your references and predictions for £10
(Personally I haven't done that process, but it is possible to do it)

:biggrin:haha can't change it anyway even if I buy it , better save that money for chicken rice.

Does anyone know any good books for LSE Management that I could mention or talk about ? I already have a few but I'm wondering if there aren't any good ones to mention or talk about.

I am also applying to UCL Management Science and LSE Mangement.
UCL seems more of a quantitative course and LSE seems to be more of a socialist course so I need to find a course that balances both courses. Please can someone recommend some books to me please.

International student(from US) applying for history. How soon do you typically get decisions?
Guys I have applied to LSE for bsc finance with the subjects in 12th grade as English, Physics, Chemistry, Math and Computer Science. As the only subject which is mandatory for LSE is math (according to their website). Will I be having any disadvantages because of it. (In 10th grade I had economics and I scored 95% ie A* and i scored 95% for math as well)
