Good Midlands Unis for English Lit?

Does anyone know of any universities specialised in English Literature in or around Birmingham and the surrounding areas?

How broad are "the surrounding areas"?

Are you looking for universities that are commuting distance of Birmingham or just "close".

Yehh commuting distance is fine kus im gonna go by train so idm the uni being further out. I just want it specialised in English lit.

There aren't really any universities that specialise in English lit (ie that only really offer English lit degrees).

The universities with the best rankings in English are generally outside commutable distance. Nottingham and York might be manageable if you're willing to do a 2hr commute each way (which might be manageable if you don't have a lot of timetabled lectures). Warwick is a slightly more do-able commute (~half an hour to Coventry station plus a bus ride to campus).

Looking within the city itself - Birmingham university is pretty good for English (it doesn't attract the super high grade entrants of the above universities but popularity with 18 year olds isn't a great measure of quality :wink:) - and Aston is great if you're interested in a combined honours course - although they're definitely not English lit "specialists" - they don't offer a single honours EngLit course only a lit & lang option. They specialise in work placements and high employability.

Ahhh okayy thanks. That's worth me looking into. Although thankfully Ive got 2 years to finish A levels and then think about all this. I heard about Aston but when I looked into it it wasn't specialised in English much so I thought that was a dud. I guess Bham uni i should sounding good atm kus im not into travelling very long distances. I would most likely fall asleep and miss my stop haha. But thanks for the help. At least now Ive got a bit of an idea as to where to look. :smile:
If you live in/near Birmingham and go to a state school you can get a reduced offer from Birmingham (e.g. AAB --> BBB) by doing this "Access to Birmingham" scheme. I think you also get an extra bursary (£££) but I'm not sure.

Nottingham and York both look particularly great for English lit as far as I've seen. I'd lean towards York. Birmingham looks like a good all-round uni, particularly for science, but I haven't looked into the English course there. I've not heard it mentioned so much in that particular context.

My friend said it sucks, apparently the lecturers aren't very helpful since they expect you to know everything and they have very high requirements

Well maybe he just isn't doing enough research in his own time. And plus everyone has their own opinions on different teachers etc. It seems good tho kus its 8th on the league table or summat

Ohh wow really? I didn't know about that so that seems really helpful. Thanks. Altho Ive still got 2 years yet. I just want to be prepared.
