As soon as you see something of the form asinθ+bsinθa\sin \theta + b\sin \theta, you should be thinking about using Rsin/cos identities.

Especially for maximum/minimum questions.

Yeah it is. Max cos(2x) and sin(2x) can take up is 1 so replace them with it.
