I don't like the 9-5 working life

I graduated last year and I'm slightly depressed about my life right now. I have no friends, I have no free time to do anything and I'm not really happy with my job. I got my job as soon as I graduated, since then I've had no social life whatsoever, all my uni friends have left me, I don't like where I work and it's just this 9 to 5 hours doesn't appeal to me.

Sometimes my job involves being placed "on-call", so at weekends I may have to sort out something if it breaks. But it's just the fact that I wake up at 6:30am every day for work, have to travel to work, get back home in the evening and then I only have a few hours to do things like cook, eat, shower, wash the dishes and then the night is already over and I have to sleep.

I don't like this 9-5 lifestyle at all, I just can't handle it anymore, it just makes me shattered every day and I'm very unhappy. I am getting a decent salary and good benefits, I just can't see myself leave. But i think it's a combination of not being happy with my job and the 9-5 hours and not having friends as well.

Any advice?

I really don't want to sound patronising, but welcome to being a grown-up. I don't like working 8-7.30 either. Or taking the bins out. Or paying my mortgage and council tax every month. Most people don't. But that's how life works. Time to suck it up.

Find a job you enjoy, even if you have to take a pay cut.

Also, as Reality Check said; welcome to adult life.

Its my dream to have a 9 to 5 job. Be thankful youre not working silly 'unsociable' hours.

Does it have to be that way though? Surely there's an alternative to that. Like the military for example.

This is why you really have to find a job you will be happy doing, I did the 9-5 life for like 2 years (I dropped out of college n worked init) and it was pretty yeah soul-killing, but you really do realise that's why people emphasise so much on finding something that you enjoy. Because you'll be doing it nearly 40 hours a week for the next 40 years.
Unless you can afford to live a reasonable lifestyle on part time hours then you're pretty much stuck. It is hard to go from having most of your time be 'free' to do what you want with to having most of your time constrained by work but that's life. Pretty much everyone is in the same position and there's no way around it. Just focus on ways to make yourself happier and make the best use of the time you have. If having friends would help try and meet people or reconnect with old friends.

Dont do it then. I hated 9-5 so i got a new job that i love and i work 3 days a week
People work to buy a house or a car or assets that they don't really need. Escape the 'rat race'. Don't do something for someone else or because you have to - do it for you. Go set up your own buisness and your own life and don't conform to the crap life that society wants you to live.

Don't spend on a fancy house or car as in the end, these things won't get you anywhere. Live by the basic necessities for your life and spend the rest on goals that matter. Whether it be fitness challenges, business or travelling the world, invest in the things that will excite and scare the **** out of you enough to get you out of bed in the morning.

In the end, no one will ever remember 'Dave the 55 year old accountant'. You can build your own legacy and live your own life where people aspire to be just like you. You only have one shot at life and this cannot go to waste. You can live with no regrets about what might have been... even if you fail.

Pursue adventures over assets.

Can i ask what was your previous role and job and what do you do now?
Take it from me.Unemployment sucks worse.Do you work in an office? The reason people don't like working in an office 9-5 is pretty obvious. Its simply not what humans are meant to do.We are not meant to sit down in front of a screen all day.Our bodies and minds are still the same as thousands of years ago but its technology that has changed. So we've basically built a society in which a lot of the workforce is going to be unhappy.I would look for a different job tbh.
But are you getting paid the right amount for your time, thats all that really matters here

Sure it sucks but thats life kid, I don't think I know one person who genuinely enjoys waking early to go to work 5-6 days a week, very few of them enjoy their job as well. But we work for a reason - its because of this job that we are able to have all the luxuries in life, pay our bills, go on holiday, buy everything we need. Its not supposed to be fun, its supposed to be... well 'work'. And the more hours we put in, the more we get out of it (financially). you have to give a little to get a little.

trust me people complain either way. either work long hours but reap the benefits of making more money or work less hours and live on less.
but sadly there is no job out there that pays you well enough for working a few hours every couple of days... unless you are a porn star, sugarbaby, prossie etc

the good thing is it might suck but you'll never not benefit from working consistently. its only going to make you look good in the future with future employers, who doesn't admire someone who is dedicated and hard-working? I say stick to it, as others have said its better than having no job or working on zero-hours. life will throw you a bone some day, a better offer will come along in the future and you'll be able to work your way up. who knows, if you make and save enough then one day you might even be able to retire early.

Right but if you don't enjoy your job then you are wasting those hours of your life. You can always get more money but you will never get more life. Those high flying bankers in the city for example, they earn loads but how many hours do they work for it? Unless you find banking fascinating then its not worth it.
Many people feel like you, but only a minority actually are willing are doing anything about it. You've got to put yourself in a position where you can, be it set up your own business, give yourself a skill that people will pay good money for minimal time. Otherwise you'll always be a wage slave.
My youngest son (32) is a Senior Software Engineer for a big well known company. He used to work office hours but got really stressed with it all. His company allowed him to work from home and he works his own hours. He is much healthier now and works on his own projects, lectures on PHP and coding and teaches it to kids in an after school setting.

This thread takes the piss. You got a job straight after graduation and you're complaining! All I've had since grad is 2 weeks of unpaid work which has just finished and I'm ****ing heartbroken that it was only temporary because working was amazing and I'm desperate to have a job. Working fulfilled me and now I'm back to being unemployed and having to apply again and again when all I want to do is work and start a career.

Leave your job right now and see how worthless your life becomes without that job and let someone who actually wants to work take your place.

What's your problem? He isn't saying he doesn't want to work, he's saying the 9-5 is doing his head in. He is one of many who feel the same way.
I tried the 9-5 for a few years, wasn't a fan.

I prefer being a shift worker and having days off in the week
