Changing my Degree?
Hiya, I'm a first year Law student and I'm warming to the idea of changing degrees because, in all honesty, stabbing myself in the foot with a plastic fork sounds more appealing than doing Law for three years :-) Hoping someone could give me some advice on whether I should change ASAP or stick it out for a year. If I am to change my degree I'm looking at either doing politics or English lit (so yeah, any advice is much appreciated)

I would definitely do something you enjoy as you'll more than likely do a lot better at it- and no one can overestimate the importance of being happy. Might as well change now with this in mind, if you can. English Lit is absolutely amazing, js.. 
Is English Literature at degree level like it was at GCSE? Reading a book and reading between the lines?

It all started out as a discussion about benefit claimants then ended up with some tory trying to tell me that capitalism is the only system that works n "how we need it for society to function" blah blah blah then came a debate and the beautiful label of commie scum was given to me :-) lol

I wish I had just picked English Lit in the first place. I have not got a clue what made me choose Law haha

Essentially, yes. There are some differences- you look at things like critical theory and philosophy of literature- so for example, as well as just analysing poetry, prose and drama you could debate questions like 'if William Wordsworth based his poem "Daffodils" on notes and images his sister Dorothy wrote, did he really write the poem or is it actually Dorothy's work?' You also do more background reading like reading author's biography's, reading about themes in the texts, so you might have to read a textbook about, say, gender theory.. It's very diverse, which makes it all the more interesting.

Pretty much everything! Publishing, editing, journalism, writing, teaching (all levels), conversion courses to law… working in bookshops, screenwriting, theatre… It's much harder to name a job you CAN'T do with English Lit.
There are rumours that you can even go into science and become a doctor etc, as apparently medical people are looking for humanities graduates now as they believe they're often more empathetic.

Oh I'm still on my gap year haha, I just know quite a bit about it at degree as I'm planning to do it when I start uni next year, and my bf does it.
