Nucleophiles

I understand that nucleophiles are lone pair donors, but what makes them want to give up the lone pair?

Nothing. They neither have personal volition nor consciousness ...

They don't "give up" their lone pair, they use it to form a bond - a shared pair of electrons.

What attracts electrons? Regardless of what master charco says, electrons don't go for a good sense of humour or looks, they go for enthusiasm, certainty, confidence etc. essentially they go for positivity. Give them a bit of positiveness and they're anyone's. Whether that be a bit of delta positiveness or a full blown ionic positive charge, they just love it.
