Hmm, I don't know how deep you want to go into with the answer. Generally, a pregnant woman needs more energy because she has to feed the baby inside her and it will consume a lot of energy because its growing.

I'm happy to provide more details, but you have to specify the question. If you want to have a basic insight in how things are done then you should know a couple of things about human biochemistry first. 1. Most of our tissue is made of proteins, which are manufactured in the process of translation from single amino acids. They are basically strings of amino acids and the addition of each AA requires energy. Similarly, the cell membrane is made of phospholipids which are manufactured by the cell or taken from digestion and have to be arranged into a bilayer to become useful to the cell. This goes on and on. We are talking about arranging billions of billions of molecules into useful structures which requires energy: to form bonds, overcome friction when moving etc.

Plus you need material: proteins, lipids and sugars mainly, but also other minerals. Iron is used for haemoglobin, Sodium, and Chlorine is used in nervous system, Calcium for bones and tones of others.

Hope this helps, ask if you need sth more specific :P
