Gcse question help!!!

Ali is
y
years old.
Bhavara is twice as old as Ali.
Ceris is 3 years younger than Ali.
The total of their ages is 125 years.
Work out the age of each person

Please show me your workings as I've been trying this for 10 minutes and cant seem to get the answer. I also looked at the mark scheme and still didnt get it.. Please help xxx
Ali: 'y' years old
Bhavara: '2y' years old (twice as old as Ali)
Ceris: '(y-3)' years old (three years younger than Ali)

Sum of their ages is 125 years so:

(y)+(2y)+(y-3)=125
3y+y-3=125
4y=128
y=32

SO, sub y into each age again:
Ali = y = 32 years old
Bhavara = 2y = 64 years old
Ceris = y-3 = 29 years old

Hope this helps x

We know that Ali is y years old. Bhavara is twice as old as Ali, therefore they are 2y years old. Ceris is 3 years younger than Ali, therefore they are y-3 years old. How do you think that you can use this information, in combination with the statement "the total of their ages is 125 years" to work out their ages?

A : B : C
Y. : 2y. : Y-3
Form an equation 4y - 3 = 125.
+3 to both side 4y = 128. Y = 32.
So, Ali = 32 , Bhavara = 64 and Chris = 29.

I get how you done the equation but I dont get why its just -3 why is not -3y... Like I dunno if I just over complicated it in my head

-3y is -3 multiplied by Y.
In this question is better to assume y as a number, if you're struggling to understand.
Chris is 3 years younger then ALI.
Let's assume y to be 8.
How would you do it now? 8-3 right? Hence y-3.

Thank you so much xx
Thanks it really helped me understand how to solve it thank you
Ali = YBha = 2YCer = Y - 3ThenY 2Y Y-3 = 1254Y - 3 = 1254Y = 128Ali = Y = 32Bha = 2Y = 64Cer = Y - 3 = 29
