Should gay conversion therapy be legal?

Since the US election, it has emerged that the Vice President-elect Mike Pence supports gay conversion therapy. In the US, it is legal and is a gray area but the government does not fund any gay conversion therapies, although it does find Planned Parenthood.

Do you think the UK should start to legalise gay conversion therapy for those who want to do it? I personally don't see the problem- why not give people the choice to potentially change their life?

It's their choice. It's not harmful, I'm not sure if it works and I don't particularly care. The government should not be wasting their time legislating on this stuff, let it be, don't outlaw it. If people are uncomfortable enough in their sexuality that they want to try and change it, well go for it. You do you bro.

I say this as a bi-guy, not that it matters but I know some would usually attack me on the basis that I don't understand being gay, or coming out etc.

Why would they want to? Is it because people like Mike Pence think that they are the spawn of Satan and should go to hell?
I don't see why it should be illegal.

The government shouldn't be funding it if there is no evidence it is effective in making people happier and it doesn't fit in with their politics. But if people are paying for it themselves, they should be able to get whatever therapy they want.

Being gay isn't a condition that needs to be treated, your sexuality is a part of you and nobody should feel the need to change it with therapy. :h:

Not everyone believes that though and some gay people want to change their sexuality or at least attempt to. Why not give them the choice to do so?

It should be legal. We allow homeopathic treatments and Chinese medicine and stuff like that which doesn't work. There is some evidence I believe that supports various gay conversion therapies. People should be given the choice to make a difference to their lives if that's what they want to do.

From what i've seen, the reason some gay people want to change their sexuality is a result of beliefs stemming from family and religion?

I don't PERSONALLY think there's anything wrong with being gay, and therefore couldn't support conversion therapy being legalised.

It is ultimately their choice, yes, but i feel it would be better for them to get advice about how their sexuality is okay and normal, rather than have the option to get it changed (which could potentially have long lasting issues) :h:
I'd love to know what exactly is involved in this process.
Of course not. This isn't therapy like "tell me about your feelings", this is literally torture (like some of them electrocute people while they're watching gay porn, or drug them into a suggestable state and show them straight porn) and denial of who you are (conforming to gender roles etc.), and research that I've seen reported on suggests that it doesn't even work.

Gosh the ignorance in this thread. Conversion therapies have been around since before Hitler (should tell you something about your conscience) and do not work. There's absolutely no evidence they do.

Can't believe people are such fools. Should we legalise conversion therapy for religions too?

There is some evidence from some ex-gay people. A lot of people do believe that it works, including the current Vice President-elect of the US.
As a free choice thing, yeah. All individuals should be able to partake so long as they can opt out.

Personally however, I don't see the merits in it and as far as I'm aware (input here would be appreciated) there isn't anything to suggest that it works. Then there's the worry of people being forced or coerced into it.

It seems as though the premise behind it is to fix something which is broken - which certainly isn't the case here. I don't like the idea of it but people should be able to undergo it if that's what they want.
It should be legal.

What it shouldn't be is compulsory or government funded.
the best solution would be that it is legal for them to exist, but Illigal for anyone to be forced to attend..

I 100% believe that they do not work.. but equally I 100% believe that a lot of tosh does not work including fortune telling, crystal healing, homeopathy, religious healing and so on and so on..

Just because something is ******** does not mean it should not exist, and if a gay indvidiual chooses to attend, they should be able to do so..

HOWEVER...

In real life, away from hypotheticals, the praticality is that if they exist many people will be forced to attend, even if they wont admit it, or there is no evidence..

so given that you cant really stop people from forcing others into it.. I would say the although not ideal, the best pratical solution is that they are banned from existing.

and how would they know?

idk why this is even a question.
Therapy should be used to resolve things harmful to the person
being gay isnt harmful and before people argue that it is if the person is uncomfortable being gay then consider that people wouldn't even feel like that if there wasnt such ignorance in the first place and 'therapies' insinuating it is wrong bc of religion or whatever.

Please provide that evidence then, from an authoritative source.

The Vice President thinks gay people are the spawn if Satan. I'm sorry but no one other than Trump and religious extremists takes him seriously.

Clearly, around half the US population does take him seriously since they voted for him alongside Trump.

Even if I give you evidence, you're just going to say that the source isn't authoritative so that you can continue to propagate your belief as the truth.
Of course it should be. These people need help to turn around their lives.

No one voted for him. He's indirectly elected. Search up what this means.

If you give me something from Westboro you'd be mad to expect me to believe it. You'll understand when and if you get to university.

But yeah, as I expected.
