So unis have a higher cutoff point for GEM than the original five year degree ? I assume it's because it's accelerated Therefore the GEM cohort have to do even better ?

Not necessarily, I think it's mainly because there's such a limited amount of places to the number of applicants who apply. The competition drives the cut offs above those seen for 5 year courses.
