Graduate Entry Medicine 2017

Scroll to see replies

Hi, I'm really keen to improve my application when I apply next year. Currently doing a Biomed undergrad.

If anyone sees this, can you please post your stats? Where applied to, what grades you have (degrees, A-Levels), entrance exam scores and extracurriculars/volunteering/jobs you've done so far. It would really help me as I feel I don't have enough experience at all. I might post this a couple times here so more people see it or might start a thread.

Thank you and I hope you're having a lovely Christmas/New Year!

Hey guys so I'm currently in my second year of biomedical science. I have attained a first in my first year and on my way to achieve a 1st in the second year. Please can anyone walk me through the major or basic things that I have to do from now till the deadline on the 15th of October. So basically I want to apply to kcl, qmu and Warwick and they all accept ukcat. I have 2 weeks of work experience lined up in June at a hospital nearby. Alevels are not considered by these universities so they don't matter. I am going to book the ukcat exam in June and hopefully achieve a really high score. Can I also apply to graduate entry dentistry or is that pushing a little. Any info will be appreciated thanks.

Hey :h:

So, this is aimed at people who will have graduated by 2017 in their first second third etc degree and want to be studying medicine by September 2017 or 2018 depending on when you decide to apply whether you're doing a 3/4 year course.

My stats are on my profile!

I thought we could encourage each other keep each other aware of news and just be a community for future medics.

If this thread already exists then sorry!!

I want to join a university for my undergraduate medicine course.
I am currently doing my A2 studies and had completed my AS with 4 A's.
Any chance for me to get a scholarship ?

Guys I'm not trying to be rude but this is a thread for people currently applying to graduate medicine. Your questions can be answered by some simple independent research online on your chosen universities. We're all trying to work on our applications and prepare for interviews, asking us to tell you every step of how to apply to medicine from now till October 15th 2017 is kind of pushing it. + You can easily find the criteria for scholarships on the university websites. Thanks :h:

Hey!

Bear in mind that the process might change for 2018 applications so you're better off looking on websites for entry requirements. As for this year, most GEM unis put a huge emphasis on entrance exams so a good score is really important. There are plenty of books and online tools to help. I used Medify and really liked it, but I have read that it wasn't helpful for everyone so find something that suits you.

Get work experience, not only for requirements but for character building, learning how to interact with patients and finding out if it is really for you. HCA roles are brilliant for this but take time to process so I would start looking now, a lot of hospitals advertise for bank staff if you're worried about fitting it in. Warwick require 70hrs over two different experiences with one not accounting for >50hrs.

You can technically apply to both, but your personal statement would have to be very vague. Each of those professions are heavily sought after and I don't think they favour people who apply for two different subjects as it doesn't appear committed!

Hope that helps and good luck
Any pharmacist/pharmacy student that has applied for GEM? Be very nice to hear from some of you guys.

where does one even start with MMI prep?
i really didnt expect to get this far and now im panicking haha

It really depends on the uni what kind of questions they ask. For instance Cambridge asks no personal questions, whereas some others do, like the standard ones about yourself motivation work experience etc. I found the MedicPortal has few nice examples of MMI topics, like ethics, NHS, empathy, professional etc... plus do revise basic science like chemistry, biology A level stuff some unis ask for it but look it up what requirements they state.

There have been a number of GEM interviews given out today. Someone did say that they had spoken to admissions and interviews will be given out this week and in January.

I have had an interview offer for Birmingham GEM since 24th November.

Think my post was relating to Barts. Congrats on the Birmingham interview though!

Hey guys, serious question for those applying to a100

I have good stats and I know I qualify for a100 but I can't afford the 9000 pound a year (or more!!!) Tuition fee issue. It would be another 2 years a so of me living at home and working before I could.

Do any of you know of help or anything? Or are you all just fortunate/hard workers ?

Thanks guys

are you a graduate applying for a100 medicine? i think most people here will be applying to a101 only for the nhs bursary and second student loan. the few who go onto a100 seems to either have worked for some time and have savings, or taken out loans from families or bank/loan companies. have you considered trying to get into an a101 programme instead? If youre not a graduate and applying for a100 i think a better thread to seek advice is the A100 thread. In this case Im pretty sure youll be entitled to student loans as it will be your first degree.

Yes I am a graduate which is why I would try for advice on this thread. I have applied to a101 twice now but unfortunately my entrance exam marks aren't good enough, English being my downfall for both exams. However my ukcat (687) is good enough for a100 so I just feel like I am in an awkward limbo at the moment.

I am resitting the gamsat in march so here is to third time lucky!

I was just after advice from those who have applied to a 100 though on how they have gone about it. For example which banks do do loans and is it actually worth it ie the long term interest effects

Just trying to pull out all the stops haha

ahh i see. 687 is a decent score and i wouldnt stop considering a101 just yet. also some unis have no entry exam requirement like birmingham. best of luck with your gamsat!

as for the finance side, sorry i cant help you much. hope youll find the answers you need. medici from the barts a101 thread just mentioned 'future finance' which appears to be a loans company specialising in flexible student loans - that might be worth looking into, or try contacting Medici for more info as he/she has likely done a bit of research on it.
I want to apply for the 2019 entry, which is when I'll finish my undergraduate studies. I have totally an arts background (currently undertaking a History degree @ the LSE), so I don't know where my application would stand. I'm kind of a flop at maths and science lol.

Do I have to retake my GCSE maths and sciences and then do an A Level on the side btw?

It depends on where you want to apply. Some medical schools do not consider your GCSE and A levels and allow applications from all degree subjects.

I've linked a graduate entry medicine guide below which shows the requirements of each school:

I'm considering withdrawing from my current course because I hate it. I don't think it would have an impact on potential offers as I already have a BSc and MSc and my current course is a PGCert in a subject not related to medicine. I have three interviews so I'm assuming my academics are fine. I am just really worried that if I withdraw from the course med schools will have an issue with it. Any advice?

i assume they gave you interviews based on your bsc and msc only so its very unlikely any uni would have an issue. wouldnt hurt to clarify with admissions just to stay on the safe side though?

I thought of doing that. Contacting admissions is weirdly scary and I'm being a cowardy custard.

So for graduates would you say you would have a better chance of applying for A100 if you can afford the tuition fees? I'm at University right now and I'm looking at 2017/18 application and Newcastle/Durham are close enough where I think I use all of the maintenance money to pay most of the tuition fee and just live at home and drive to University.

Hi Phoebe!

I am currently in my final year in the Mpharm course. I am hoping to apply after my pre registration year.

Which universities did you apply to and which ones rejected you? did they say why?
