I can't for toffee get around indices.

Can someone please explain how I'd turn y=10/x into an indice?

The question is "Find the equation of the normal to the curve y=10/x at the point (1,10)"

This question relies on knowing this rule about indices

If this is unfamiliar to you, I strongly recommend learning it.

But does this clear up how to turn y=10x y = \frac{10} {x} into an indice?

Index is the singular of indices. It's a mistake I make all the time, except I write indexes instead of indices.


I'd strongly recommend making a real effort to learn all of the rules for index notations ASAP, because they are essential in all of the core modules. You're setting yourself up to fail otherwise. Try this video:

Big round of applause, it wasn't a competition… you could've at least explained that 1/x = x^-1 which needs to be multiplied by 10 giving 10/x on one side and 10x^-1 on the other hence the answer, it's about helping people learn not competing for an answer
