CoffeeAndPolitics Grade Boosting Journey 2017

CoffeeAndPolitcs Grade Boosting Journey 2017 (GCSE)

[scroll] Updates every Monday and Friday unless stated otherwise! Enjoy the blog! [/scroll]

About Me:
My name is @CoffeeAndPolitics, I'm Chinese (speak Cantonese) and I'm from South East London. I'm 16-years-old and I'm a member of both the Labour Party and TSR Labour Party. I support Liverpool FC and my political views are centre-left. I also run the Year 11 thread and I am currently the Secretary of State for Energy and Environment in TSR's MHoC.

Subjects I'm taking:
- AQA GCSE Biology
- AQA GCSE Chemistry
- AQA GCSE Physics
- AQA GCSE English Language [9-1]
- AQA GCSE English Literature [9-1]
- AQA GCSE French
- Edexcel GCSE Mathematics [9-1]
- OCR GCSE Computing
- OCR GCSE History
- Edexcel GCSE Chinese *

* I'm currently studying GCSE Chinese (Cantonese) externally.

Current Grades:
Results based off Year 11 Autumn
Key: ( ) indicates current grade and [ ] indicates predicted grade.
- AQA GCSE Biology (Grade D) [Grade B]
- AQA GCSE Chemistry (Grade C) [Grade A]
- AQA GCSE Physics (Grade B) [Grade A]
- AQA GCSE English Language [9-1] (Grade 7) [Grade 6]
- AQA GCSE English Literature [9-1] (Grade 5) [Grade 6]
- AQA GCSE French (Grade A) [Grade A*]
- Edexcel GCSE Mathematics [9-1] (Grade 6) [Grade 6]
- OCR GCSE Computing (Grade C) [Grade B]
- OCR GCSE History (Grade A*) [Grade A*]
- Edexcel GCSE Chinese * (N/A) [N/A]

My Ambitions:
I want to study Government & Politics/Sociology, History, Economics and maybe French for A Levels.

For university, I want to study a degree in History and Politics or a Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree and it would be a dream getting an unconditional offer from a university like Lancaster and I genuinely believe that is feasible pending on the work and effort I put in.

After university, I definitely want a career in politics and would love to start of as a junior caseworker earning a decent salary in Portcullis House, Houses of Parliament, Westminster before progressing to become either a London AM/MP.

Study/Revision Tips

Study tips to get the grade you want

Be persistent.

Use the Pomodoro Technique (google it if you don't know), it is a really effective way of getting a lot of work done in a short amount of time.

Listen to some Focus music on Spotify or something to help you concentrate!

Be organised and neat with work so you can easily review it later when you need it.

If your struggling, ask the teacher (or friends) or do some research by yourself on the internet to help you understand. Things like YouTube, BBC Bitesize et cetera...

Be creative with notes, don't just write them out, highlight important things to remember and keywords.

Don't just copy from a textbook, you won't understand (well I don't). Instead read the textbook then when you're making the notes try to put it into your own words, simplify it so it can be easier to comprehend.

I drank lots of caffeine (especially coffee because it is slow-release) during exam season to make me more alert and do stuff... quickly It actually helps most people but I wouldn't recommend drinking any quick-release caffeine or drinking it after noon because it is going to be hard to go to sleep.

On that note, get LOTS of sleep.

Also on that note, read your notes/textbook/work before you go to bed because it will be easier to remember.

Find out your learning style. You could be an audio learner, visual, kinesthetic... I am mostly a visual learner. Click here to do a small test to find out what kind of learner you are

BIG tip. Plan ahead, if your going to do 2 hours of studying tomorrow make sure you do that, if you only manage to do 1 hour don't let that discourage you. You can always make up for it the next day, maybe the next day your planning to do 2 hours but since you missed out on 1 hour that day you add it on to make 3 hours. Just have that mindset and it will get you through it.

Don't stress, more you do the more likely you are going to freak out mid-test and possibly fail.

Update #1: Wednesday 4th January 2017
A new year means it's time for a fresh start and to turn over a new leaf and that is what I want to grasp before I sit my GCSEs from May. It's not that fair away and I hear other students panicking, I'm also worried and I'm not going to lie.

New Year's Resolution 2017:
1) Dedication to my academic studies - My grades are quite mediocre at the moment and I'm confident I can turn this around.
2) Improve self-confidence - Not going to lie but sometimes I lack self-esteem so it's definitely something I need to work on.
3) Sign up for a gym membership - Important that I stay healthy and not be snowed under mountains of school work all the time.
4) Do more voluntary work after GCSEs
5) Become a better MP in the MHoC

First of all, I would like to say that I did enjoy my Christmas/New Year's break and I would like to wish everybody a happy, prosperous new year. (Enjoy the picture below  )
download.jpeg

Second of all, I'm going to start revision for my GCSEs very soon though I'll do it bit by bit with the help on using Todoist which is recommended by my good friend, Matthew (@CoffeeGeek). You can check out his blog in the OP  . Also, I have my latest results which is updated in the OP - overall I'm not going to say it was too bad but improvement is needed.

Academic Update:
Computing (ESO): Green Pen Feedback for recent assessment. It was a really long and dull lesson.
English (OSO): Romeo & Juliet - We're starting Act 2 tomorrow
PE (DCA): Basketball - More of a random choice and I just did some drills for the entire lesson.
Maths (KWA): Inverse Functions recap and Green Pen Feedback which we'll do next lesson.

H/W that needs to be completed:
Maths (KWA): Green Pen papers 1 & 2 - Due Friday 6th January 2017

Good luck with everything CAP. It's good to see that you're hoping to do some voluntary work, something I'm quite passsionate about myself. Did you have anything in particular in mind?

Thanks QQ, same here from me. Not sure to be honest, maybe helping out my MP with constituency related stuff after my GCSEs if I'm not going away.

Update #2: Friday 6th January 2017

Academic Update:
French (SDA): We were testing our knowledge on basic stuff in French whereby we discuss our opinions on certain school subjects and are now focusing on School, College and Future Plans. I think we're going to re-draft and improve our CA with changes to a few questions.
English (OSO): Romeo & Juliet - We've finished Act 2,Scene 2 and it's been a mixed lesson with some drama involved of which I almost played Romeo again :/ (I'm not a romancer okay!).
Chemistry (DLA): We've started Unit 3 and have finished C3.1 The Periodic Table.
Maths (KWA): The Maths homework to correct questions in Papers 1 & 2 literally stressed me out and we're fortunate to have an extended deadline until Monday. I've also managed to get hold of the mark scheme thanks to a classmate of mine (HoD gave it to him on request) but obviously I'll try to understand the question as I correct them in Green Pen. Also, we're focusing on the harder, newer topics now to prepare us for the February mocks and we're doing Iterations now which isn't too bad.
History (MPO): I got 80% in my most recent History mock exam which is a Grade A* I believe and I've been given the advice to start Q5 before the other questions and to be consise :P - I decided to include enough detail and not to be vague so I don't drop marks. Also, we're focusing on the Treaty of Versailles and how that affected the Weimar Republic.
Physics (PPA): I can't recall where we are for Unit 3 as the lessons are delivered without following the order on the specification :frown: . We're currently finishing off P3.1 Medical Applications in Physics - I find it so boring.

Announcements/News:
My current school's sixth form interview has been postponed from Monday 9th January 2017 to Wednesday 11th January 2017 because my original interviewer KEP has another commitment as she's the vice principal and to be honest, I'm relieved I don't have her as she's not an easy person to impress. I now have TTA who's the Head of 6th Form as well as an associate vice principal who isn't too bad as after all it was her who helped me with applying to the school's sixth form. I'm a bit nervous for the interview but I'm sure I'll be fine.

Here are the confirmed exams dates for my next mock exam:
6th February 2017 - English Language Paper 1&2
20th February 2017 - English Literature Paper 1
6th March 2017 - English Literature Paper 2

H/W that needs to be completed:
Maths (KWA): Green Pen corrections for Paper 1&2 and questions on external sheet - Due Monday 9th January 2017
French (SDA): Learn Vocab for Schools/Colleges & Future Plans (Higher Tier) - Due Thursday 12th January 2017
English (OSO): Read Act 2,Scene 2 and find where it says eyes and explain the significance of this. - Due Tuesday 10th January 2017
Physics (PPA): Go through the specification and tick parts that we've covered and complete the two booklets. - Due Friday 13th January 2017
Hi, good luck with the year! x

(I also noticed that we have the same political stance... hey, fellow lefty )

Thanks for wishing me luck for the year. Same applies to you

If you're interested in politics, I highly recommend joining the MHoC here https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2443718 and join a party  (I think TSR Socialists or TSR Labour would be a suitable choice).

Good job with the History exam :h: I'm sure you'll be fine with the sixth form interview - I know with my sixth form the interviews were more to discuss your subject choices than anything else, are you applying for the sixth form of the school you're currently at?

Unless the one you're currently at is very selective, I can't imagine you having a problem with it :nah:

Update #5: Saturday 21st January 2017

I'm really sorry for the very late update, I've been extremely busy this week as workload continues to build on me as the countdown begins for my GCSE exams. Also, I've started my first GCSE Chinese (Cantonese) preparation lesson and the timetable to get all the CAs for Writing and Speaking done and dusted is really tight; therefore, I have a real challenge of managing my time efficiently in order to not burn myself out and be stressed out.

Secondly, I couldn't resist commenting on the political news of the week but I'm really annoyed that President Trump has succeeded Barack Obama as US President and it worries me what his intentions are for the US given how he's well known for his "extreme views".

michelle-obama-displeased-1.jpg
Really summarises my feelings towards President Trump.

Academic Update:
Maths (KWA): We're doing Quadratic Sequences (Quadratic Progression) in Maths currently and we have an end of unit test on Monday.
Biology (TBA): We're near completion of Unit 3 of the Biology spec as we've just finished B3.4.1 Waste from human activity.
Computing (ESO): We've been given My Revision Notes textbooks for the outgoing OCR GCSE Computing spec and we've also been given the GCP revision guide and exam practice for the new OCR GCSE 9-1 Computing spec oddly. Also, I've managed to dodge the deadline to hand in A453 for final submission - I'm not finished evidence wise.
English (OSO): We're currently on Act 3 Scene 2 of Romeo & Juliet and have been doing a lot of exam practice questions :/ .
French (SDA): We had another vocabulary test of which I almost got full marks (got 1 wrong) and we're focusing on the topic of school uniform.
History (MPO): We're looking about the year of 1923 of the Weimar Republic currently in History and I'm going to attend the ESS session on Monday for revision on the Cold War.
Chemistry (DLA): We're still on C3.2.1 Hard and soft water and C3.2.2 Purifying water.
Physics (PPA): Sir was absent to conduct some lesson observation with ESO or whatever he was needed for meaning we had cover to complete flipping exam questions on what we've learnt :/ .

Confirmed exams dates for my next mock exam:
6th February 2017 - English Language Paper 1&2
20th February 2017 - English Literature Paper 1
6th March 2017 - English Literature Paper 2
